Review of Radiesse®
Radiesse® is a sterile, latex-free, non-pyrogenic,
cohesive injectable dermal filler
Principle component of Radiesse® is:
30% of synthetic calcium
hydroxylapatite (CaHA)
(Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) CaHA Particles
Uniform and spherical
Naturally-occurring mineral in body 25–45 microns
70% of aqueous sodium
carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) gel
matrix
Generally recognized as safe by US
FDA
Radiesse® Approved Indications
Radiesse® (+) Lidocaine injectable
implant is indicated for plastic and
reconstructive procedures, including
deep dermal and sub-dermal soft tissue
augmentation of the facial area, and is
also intended for restoration and
correction of fat or volume loss
(lipoatrophy) in the facial area and for
rejuvenation of the hands.
History of Radiesse® Technology:
A Success Story
Mode of Action: Immediate and Long-
Lasting Effect
Immediate 1:1 correction is achieved through the sodium carboxymethylcellulose gel matrix
followed by gradual and individual biodegradation
The remaining CaHA-microspheres form a “scaffold” that provides mechanical stimuli
triggering fibroblasts into producing collagen and elastin
Immediate 1:1 correction High density
Before treatment
after injection of collagen and elastin
Fibroblasts
Mechanism of Action
RADIESSE® treatment provides immediate correction
when injected
Overtime, the CMC gel is absorbed and the CaHA
microspheres support in-growth of the resident tissue
In the skin, cells deposit new collagen, creating new
dermal matrix
This new tissue formation combined with CaHA is
responsible for extended correction length
As the gel is absorbed, the CaHA
particles act as a scaffold around
which new collagen is deposited
Mode of Action: Long-Term Effect – New
Tissue Formation
New Tissue Formation:
The immediate lifting and volumising effect of Radiesse® is gradually followed by new
tissue formation through:
Neocollagenesis (production of collagen type III, gradually converted to type I)1,2
Elastin production (improves skin elasticity)1
Dermal cell proliferation (e.g., fibroblasts)1
Angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels)1
The result is a long-lasting aesthetic effect characterized by a tight and elastic skin with
increased skin thickness.

Radiesse® is Biocompatible
The Radiesse® microspheres are slowly metabolised through natural endogenous
mechanisms via phagocytosis.(11) The released calcium and phosphate ions are
identical to the mineral portion of the body.(11)
Intact, non-degraded
CaHA-microspheres*
Partially degraded
CaHA-microspheres*
* Scanning electron photomicrograph.
Biodegradable Nature of CaHA
Immediately after injection 25 months post-injection
Radiesse® injected on the cheek (1.6 mL on each side)
2.5 years after injection-revealed no presence of CaHA
The long-term correction provided by CaHA is due to collagen production,
and not due to the continued presence of the microspheres
