The Undeniable Reality of the
Gospel: Jesus Christ
Text: 1 John 1:1-4
I. The Proclamation
of the Gospel’s Truthfulness
A. Jesus Christ is Eternal
What was from the beginning, (1:1a)
❖ Jesus Christ was already in existence when the heavens and
the earth were created.
❖He is not a created being but existed from all eternity.
❖He was continuously in existence before the beginning.
Jesus Testifies Himself as Eternal.
❖ “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am”
(John 8:58).
❖ I AM - as the eternal existing One, the God who is the source
of all existence and who always has been and always will be.
B. The Humanity of Jesus Christ
“what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what
we have looked at and touched with our hands” (v.1)
-heard the Lord Jesus speaks. (Matt. 4:23; 5-7)
-have seen the Lord Jesus with his eyes
-have looked at the Lord Jesus. (Matt. 13:16-17)
-had touched with his hand the Lord Jesus Christ
(John 13:23, 25; 21:20).
❖the Word of Life
-the person and work of Jesus Christ as proclaimed in
the gospel.
❖the life was manifested
-means “to reveal,” or “to make visible what
was hidden.”
II. The Purpose
of the Gospel’s Declaration
A. Genuine Fellowship
So that you too may have fellowship with us; and
indeed our fellowship is with the Father, and
with His Son Jesus Christ. (1:3b)
Fellowship
-as vocabulary of a Christian. It simply means
“to have in common”.
-Greek term koinonia, signifies a mutual participation in
a common cause or shared life
❖ John necessary reaffirmation of the basic truths of their faith so
that their fellowship with God would be sustained.
❖ The assurance that we are in God’s family—born of God
❖ A person who is born of God
-lives a righteous life (1John 2:29).
-does not practice sin (1 John 3:9).
-A believer will occasionally commit sin, but he will not make it a
habit to sin. (cf. 1 John 1:8—2:2)
-love each other and their heavenly Father
(cf. 1 John 4:7; 5:1).
-no love for the world system around them (1 John 2:15–17)
-overcome the world (1 John 5:4).
Implication:
True fellowship was not created by material closeness to the
material Jesus, but by the work of the Holy Spirit after the
finished work of Jesus on the cross. Therefore, we can enter
into the same fellowship
with God that the Apostles could enter.
B. Genuine Joy
❖The secular, dictionary definition of joy
- ”the emotion evoked(draw out) by well-being, success, or
good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one
desires”
❖In Christian life
-Joy is not defined by this.
-We are looking for the Joy that is genuine
Martin Lloyd-Jones - define Christian joy:
• Joy is something very deep and profound,
something that affects the whole and entire personality.
• There is only one thing that can give true joy and that is
contemplation of the Lord Jesus Christ.
-He satisfies our minds
-He satisfies our emotions
-He satisfies our desires
-He and His great salvation and in Him we are complete.
Implication:
Joy comes from understanding the reality
of Christ, the saving truth of the gospel,
and the fellowship that each Christian has
with God and fellow believers.
What destroys our fellowship & Joy?
Basically, Sin!
Sin promises joy, but it always produces sorrow. (destroy
our physical, emotional, mental and
spiritual life)
The pleasures of sin are temporary—they are only for a
season (Heb. 11:25).
CONCLUSION:
Questions to ponder…..
• Is Jesus Christ the center of our joy?
• Do we enjoy our fellowship with God & our fellow believers?
“Let us faithfully share the good news of Jesus Christ”s
