01 NEW CONCEPT IDEAS
DESCRIPTION
● It’s a general plan of how you’re
going to solve a problem, creating
several design sketches that’ll seek
to fulfill this goal.
OBJECTIVE
● Various alternatives and design
ideas that provide us with
solutions are originated. Then,
they’re evaluated and the best is
chosen.
02 DESIGN REQUIREMENTS
DESCRIPTION
To understand the requirements, we use the
Design must begin with customer’s information to determine what the
requirements. customer needs as a solution.
BASED ON THIS, WE CAN MEET :
Efficient
Work Materials Cost
– EXAMPLE –
Design of Large
Passenger
Aircraft
– Requirements –
→ Max. Speed: 290 m/s
→ Range: 15000 km
→ Time of flight: 15 hrs
→ Aircrafts wings to be
made of titanium.
Sometimes some
requirements have to be
renegotiated.
This happens when the solutions
are too complex, costly, heavy or
bulky.
In the best case, we can found a
better solution for the problem.
03 CONCEPT SKETCH
● The concept sketch is an outline
of the most appropriate design to
be detailed later. Once several
conceptual ideas have been
generated, it is essential to rank
them against each other.
– EXAMPLE OF CONCEPT SKETCHES SELECTION–
– EXAMPLES OF THE CONCEPT SKETCH DESIGN –
04 FIRST GUESS SIZING
● In this step, estimations such as
the initial weight of the
concept aircraft are performed
to determine, for example, the
maximum take-off weight for
the specific requirements of the
mission. The maximum take-
off weight estimate would then
be used to size the airframe,
wings, etc.
05 INITIAL LAYOUT
& ANALYSIS
AIRCRAFT DESIGN
● Once an estimation of the product sizing was
obtained for the conceptual aircraft, the
selected concept ideas are designed and
modeled using, for example, CAD softwares
such as SolidWorks.
● Aerodynamics, weight, propulsion, etc. are
some of the relevant properties of an aircraft
that are further analysed.

07 REVISED LAYOUT &
ANALYSIS
● Once it has been analyzed and redefined, our
layout has been revised and once again, the
same and more tests are carried out in
simulations to review, analyse and verify
aspects such as:
→ Aerodynamics
→ Propulsion
→ Stability and control
→ Structures
→ Cost
→ Subsystems
Aerodynamics
The wing was divided into finite
segments to obtain the aerodynamic →
forces, lift and drag.
Propulsion
Multiple designs were generated and
analyzed to study its effect on the aircraft
performance.
Some of these were the engine location.
→
Stability and control
To minimize the instability on the aircraft, the
← trim settings must be correctly adjusted to
control the nose up moments on the aircraft.
Subsystems
They are the fuselage, wings,
empennage, landing gear, etc.
← We must make sure they are in optimal
conditions.
08 REFINED SIZING &
PERFORMANCE OPTIMIZATION
● It is when the design has already met the
requirements and has passed the tests that were
made in the final analysis.
● If it meets them, it will go to the next phase, but
if it does not meet them, it has to be redesigned.
So, after the long iterative process of aircraft
design and analysis, the final clean aircraft
concept is obtained and we can now move on to
the second phase, the preliminary design.
