Design Thinking

This document discusses reverse engineering and provides examples. Reverse engineering is taking something apart and analyzing it to understand how it works. The reverse engineering process involves measuring key components of a product to create CAD drawings and digital models. This reveals the original design intent. Reverse engineering is used to recreate designs when the original blueprints are unavailable, such as for legacy replacement parts. Examples provided include reverse engineering an iron, printed circuit board, and the process of deconstructing and reassembling a circuit board to understand its design. The overall purpose of reverse engineering is to understand the original design of a product.

DESIGN THINKING

PRESENTATION 2
 REVERSE ENGINEERING PROCESS
AND CASE STUDY
WHAT IS REVERSE
ENGINEERING ? process of taking something
Reverse engineering (RE) is the
apart and analyzing its workings in detail, usually with the
intention of understanding its structure, function, and operation.

 A process in which software, machines, aircraft, architectural

structures and other products are deconstructed to extract design
information from them.

 The reverse engineering process is named as such because it

involves working backward through the original design process.
FORWARD VS REVERSE
REVERSE ENGINEERING
PROCESS
 When reverse engineering a mechanical product, you start by analyzing the dimensions
and attributes of the product in question.
 Measurements of the widths, lengths and heights of key components in the product are
made.

 Some engineers use 3D scanning technologies to make these kinds of measurements.

 After all the pertinent information has been gathered and recorded, you can use this data to
create computer-aided design (CAD) drawings for subsequent analysis and development.

 These digital models help to unveil design intent and inform the creation of a reverse-
engineered component.

 You might have one product with a unique innovation from two year’s earlier, but the
manufacturer has since gone out of business. To link that innovation to a newer product for
convenience and continuity’s sake, the engineering team will need to examine the obsolete
PURPOSE OF REVERSE
ENGINEERING:
 Reverse engineering gives you a virtual copy of the blueprint that
went into the original design.

 The most accurate way to recreate the designs for items that went
out of production decades.

 Reverse engineering is perhaps the only way to bring such products

back to life whose blueprint is destroyed.

 To obtain a working model of an old product.

REVERSE ENGINEERING OF AN
IRON:
APPLICATIONS:
 LEGACY PARTS REPLACEMENT

 PARTS SERVICE OR REPAIR

 FAILURE ANALYSIS

 PARTS ENGINEERING

 DIAGNOSTIC AND PROBLEM

SOLVING
PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD:
 PCB Board design defines the electrical pathways between
components

 It is derived from a schematic representation of circuit

 Imparted from a schematic design, it translates the schematic

symbols and libraries into physical components and
connections.
REVERSE ENGINEERING OF PCB’s
 (CASE
Technicians STUDY):
start identification and examination of various components of board.

 Before disassembly, the reverse-engineering team will photograph the board up close
from the front and back to create a record of the board’s composition.

 The engineers then begin the process of deconstructing the board.

 In cases where the objective is to replicate the design in question, engineers might test
their ability to replicate the product by disassembling and reassembling an existing copy
several times over.

 They take value measurements of key parts, including the capacitors and resistors.

 Provides insight into how the board’s components work together to enable the PCB to
function correctly.
 The team then draws up a list of the materials and the order in which they were placed
