SMTP Basics for IT Professionals

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is a set of communication guidelines that allow software to transmit electronic mail over the Internet. It provides a mail exchange between users on the same or different computers and supports sending a single message to one or more recipients, including text, voice, video or graphics. The main purpose of SMTP is to set up communication rules between servers to identify themselves and handle errors such as incorrect email addresses. It works by having the sender's user agent prepare and send the message to the sending MTA, which then transfers the mail across the network to the receiving MTA.

Working of SMTP

The message body contains the actual information read by the receipt.
