5 Quadratic Inequalities 5a

Here are the step-by-step workings: 1) Given: Solve (x + 2)(x - 1) > 0 2) Factorize the quadratic expression: (x + 2)(x - 1) 3) Set each factor equal to 0 to find the x-intercepts (critical points): (x + 2) = 0 => x = -2 (x - 1) = 0 => x = 1 4) Sketch the graph of y = (x + 2)(x - 1) 5) The solution is where the graph is above the x-axis, which is: x < -2 or x > 1 Therefore, the solution is: x < -2

QUADRATIC

INEQUALITIES
OBJECTIVES:

Illustrates and solve quadratic

inequalities;
and identify the solution of inequality
by using graph
MEMORY CHECK
x+4 A rectangle has a length of 4 centimeters
x
more than the width. The area of a
rectangle is 77 square centimeters. Find
the dimensions of the rectangle.
Solution: 77= (x+4)(x) 0=x²+4x-77
Let x be the width 77= x²+4x 0=(x+11)(x-7)
77-77=x²+4x-77
Let x+4 be the length Roots are -11 and 7
0=x²+4x-77

QUADRATIC INEQUALITY

A quadratic inequality is an inequality that contains a

polynomial of degree 2 and can be written in any of the
following forms:
ax² + bx + c > 0 ax² + bx + c < 0
ax² + bx + c ≥ 0 ax² + bx + c ≤ 0
Where a, b and c are real numbers and a≠0
QUADRATIC INEQUALITY

Example: 5x² + 10x + 6 > 0

x² + 5x - 4 < 0
2x² - 15x + 8 ≥ 0
x² - 6x + 7 ≤ 0
NOT QUADRATIC INEQUALITY

Example: 5xᵌ + 10x + 6 > 0

4x ( x² + 8 ) < - 1
3(x+8)≥x-6
3x ( x - 2 ) + 1 ≥ x⁴ - 6

QUADRATIC INEQUALITIES

Example: Are 5, 0, and -1 solutions to x² + 5x – 14 ≤ 0?

Checking using substitution.
Let x = 5 Let x = 0 Let x = -1
x² + 5x – 14 ≤ 0 x² + 5x – 14 ≤ 0 x² + 5x – 14 ≤ 0
(5)² + 5(5) – 14 ≤ 0 (0)² + 5(0) – 14 ≤ 0 (-1)² + 5(-1) – 14 ≤ 0
25 + 25 -14 ≤ 0
36 ≤ 0
x 0 + 0 -14 ≤ 0
-14 ≤ 0
1 - 5 - 14 ≤ 0
-18 ≤ 0
Therefore, 0 and -1 are solutions and 5 is not.
