Introduction
Diesel generators are commonly used as a backup power source in case of power outages or when
a reliable power source is not available. The objective of this study is to provide an overview of
diesel generators and their suitability for the power needs of the PAF-IAST building.
In this presentation, we will explore the mathematical equations used to calculate the efficiency,
power output, consumption rate, and fuel consumption rate of a diesel generator. We will also
analyze the power requirements of the academic blocks of PAF-IAST and discuss why a diesel
generator is suitable for these requirements.

Study of Diesel Generator

Efficiency of Diesel Generator:

The efficiency of a diesel generator is the ratio of the useful output power (electrical
power generated) to the input power (fuel energy supplied). It is usually
expressed as a percentage.
The efficiency can be calculated using the following equation:
Efficiency (%) = (Electrical Power Output / Fuel Energy Input) × 100
Power Output of Diesel Generator:
The power output of a diesel generator is the electrical power it generates. It
can be calculated by multiplying the generator's rated power factor by
the apparent power rating (kVA or kilovolt-ampere). The equation is as
follows:
Power Output (kW) = Rated Power Factor × Apparent Power Output
(kVA)
Fuel Consumption Rate of Diesel Generator:

The consumption rate of a diesel generator refers to the rate at

which it consumes fuel. It is typically expressed in liters
per hour (L/h) or gallons per hour (GPH). The consumption
rate can be calculated using the following equation:
Fuel Consumption Rate (L/h) = Fuel Flow Rate (L/h) ×
Specific Fuel Consumption (L/kWh)
Here, the fuel flow rate is the amount of fuel supplied to the
generator, and the specific fuel consumption is the amount
of fuel consumed per unit of electrical output.
Factors Affecting Fuel Consumption:

There are several factors that can affect the fuel consumption of a diesel generator:
Load:
The fuel consumption of a diesel generator is directly proportional to the load it is carrying. As the
load increases, the fuel consumption also increases.it can be seen in the following figure.
b) Generator Size:
Larger generators tend to consume more fuel compared to smaller ones, assuming all other factors
remain constant.
c) Operating Conditions:
Factors such as ambient temperature, altitude, humidity, and maintenance condition can affect the
fuel consumption of a diesel generator.
It's important to note that the equations provided here are general guidelines, and actual calculations
may require additional factors or considerations specific to the generator being analyzed.

Suitability Of Diesel Generator

The diesel generator with an output power of 240KW seems to be suitable for meeting the full
load requirement of the building, which is 190KW. With a power output that exceeds the total
power requirement, the generator has sufficient capacity to handle the load without overloading.
Load Factor:
When considering the suitability of the diesel generator, it is essential to take into account load
factors and power factor correction. Load factors refer to the ratio of the actual power used to the
maximum power demand
Power Factor:
Additionally, power factor correction should be considered. Power factor is a measure of the
efficiency with which electrical power is utilized. A low power factor can result in inefficient use
of power and lead to additional costs.
Fuel Consumption Rate of Diesel Generator:

The consumption rate of a diesel generator refers to the

rate at which it consumes fuel. Fuel Consumption
Rate (L/h) = Fuel Flow Rate (L/h) × Specific Fuel

Importance of Scheduling in Optimizing Generator Operation

Fuel efficiency: Proper scheduling minimizes fuel consumption and maximizes efficiency.

Cost reduction: Optimized scheduling reduces operating costs by using the generator only
when necessary.

Equipment maintenance: Effective scheduling reduces wear and tear on the generator,
extending its lifespan.

Load balancing: Evenly distributing the load among multiple generators improves
efficiency and prevents overloading.

Proposing a Scheduling Algorithm

Proposal for an Optimized Scheduling Algorithm:
Priority-Based Scheduling Algorithm:

Load forecasting: Accurately predicting load patterns to schedule generator operation.

Priority-based scheduling: Prioritizing critical loads to ensure essential services are always provided.
Load balancing: Distributing the load evenly among generators for optimal efficiency.
Time-of-use pricing considerations: Utilizing lower-cost periods to run the generator.
Dynamic adjustments: Adapting to changes in load and unexpected events in real-time.
Maintenance scheduling: Incorporating planned maintenance periods into the scheduling algorithm.

The suitability of the diesel generator for the building's full load requirement of
190KW appears to be adequate, as the generator's output power of 240KW exceeds
the total power requirement. However, it is essential to consider load factors and
power factor correction for efficient and reliable power supply.

operation. Proper scheduling can significantly impact fuel efficiency, cost reduction,
equipment maintenance, and load balancing. It ensures the generator operates at its
optimal capacity, minimizing fuel consumption and reducing wear and tear on the
equipment.
