Effective Case analysis

Case Study

A description of an actual administrative situation


involving a decision to be made or a problem to be
solved. It can a real situation that actually happened
just as described, or portions have been disguised for
reasons of privacy.
Objectives of Case Analysis

Using cases to learn about the practice of strategic management is a


powerful way for you to accomplish five things:
1. Increase your understanding of what managers should and should not do in guiding a
business to success.

2. Build your skills in sizing up company resource strengths and weaknesses and in conducting
strategic analysis in a variety of industries and competitive situations.

3. Get valuable practice in identifying strategic issues that need to be addressed, evaluating
strategic alternatives, and formulating workable plans of action.

4. Enhance your sense of business judgment, as opposed to uncritically accepting the


authoritative crutch of the professor or “back-of-the-book” answers.

5. Gaining in-depth exposure to different industries and companies, thereby acquiring


something close to actual business experience.
Types of Cases

CLASSICAL CASE
A holistic approach to the problem. It includes information such
as: biographical data, psychological evidence, economic
considerations, spiritual evidence, historical data, etc.
 EX POST FACTO CASE
An already developed solution to a problem is analyzed and
evaluated.
 CRITICAL INCIDENT
An after the fact approach. A minievent is described by the
instructor and learners discuss. Brings the learner to the climax
point in the problem.
Types of Cases

EMBRYO CASE
A small amount of information approach.
Just enough information is given to
establish a problem.
 IMPROMPTU CASE
A real problem existing in the current
group is looked at and potential
solutions are suggested.

A useful learning tool  used in management


education to give student a feel for the complexities
if the real work and how the theories, models and
research being studied can be used in practice.
Steps in Analyzing Case Studies

1. Gain an overview of the case


2. Establish what has happened (specify objectives)
3. Determine the causes
4. Develop possible solutions
5. Evaluate these solutions
6. Formulate recommendations (write up solutions)

Alternative: 1. What is the business problem; 2. What factors affect


the problem; 3. How would your team solve the problem?
Justification.
Standard Case Interview Questions

What would be your approach for introducing a product into a foreign market? What are the
risks and benefits to consider i.e. producing in your own country vs producing in the new
country, etc?

Company ABC is struggling, should it be restructured? Identify the three main problems it's
facing. What is the most important problem the company is facing? How would you recommend
the company address this problem? How would you turn this company around? Provide your
reasoning for your recommendation(s).

A toy company has been experiencing decline sales for the last two seasons. Research suggests
that introducing several new product lines is the solution. Develop a marketing strategy for the
company's largest product line, including pricing, product packing, etc.

A large chain of retail clothing stores is struggling with profitability. Bases on your review fo the
company's financial statements, what problems can you identify? Can this company be turned
arounds? How would you go about deciding?
A new Eddie Bauer Store is being opened up in London. Discuss all the marketing issues
regarding the opening of this new location.

Common Errors in Analyzing Case Studies
Not understanding and accepting the facts of the
case
Not explaining exactly what the problems are and
why they have occurred
Making unwarranted assumptions to try to simplify
the case
Sticking to generalities, such as “they must try to
improve communication”
Common Errors in Analyzing Case Studies
Not integrating the various points into a preferred
solution
Not using theories and concepts currently being
studied in the course
Seeking ways out of the situation (such as “fire them
all”) rather than trying to solve the problems
Ignoring practicalities
