ABOUT 3D PRINTING
• 3D printing is not for advanced users only.
• Need a .STL file. This means stereolithography and is a
file format used by CAD software.
• Finding .STL files > www.thingiverse.com
• Creating .STL files > www.tinkercad.com
• Learning about other CAD software > O’Reilly for Higher
Education available through Library Databases
• Start at Library homepage: www.library.ttu.edu
• Click on the Databases A-Z Link
• Click on the “O” in the alphabetical list
• Find O’Reilly for Higher Education and click to open
HOW DO I PRINT?
1. To print a 3D object, you must first have a .STL file. You may
have already created one, or you can use resources such as
Thingiverse or TinkerCAD to download or create one.
2. Email your .STL file to
[email protected] or visit the Makerspace.
Let us know your preferences on color and other settings.
3. Our staff will verify the integrity of the file and may ask you to
resubmit if there are errors that we cannot easily fix.
4. We will print your object.
5. When your object is complete, you can come by and pick it
up.
THINGIVERSE
• www.thingiverse.com
• Online community and repository for 3D printable files
and objects.
• Includes collections, groups, challenges, and even a
customizer for some files.
• Objects use the Creative Commons licensing system.
• Use the search bar to find an object that you want to try
and print, start with a simple object to get a feel for how
the printers work.
TINKERCAD
• www.tinkercad.com
• Free, online 3D design platform. You can create and edit
objects and then export to .STL file format (needed for the
Library Makerspace printers)
• Website does require registration with Google, Facebook,
or other accounts.
• Includes tutorial videos to get you started.
• Projects save to your account and you can even import
some files from Thingiverse.
TINKERCAD BASICS
• Shapes: objects that fill space on the workplane. They
can be their own object or grouped with other shapes to
form more complex designs. They are generally indicated
as shapes with color in the menu (but obviously these
colors are only to distinguish them from each other)
TINKERCAD BASICS
• Holes: negative space that “cuts” into objects. Most
shapes can also be switch to be a hole and will help you
do things like engrave designs or excise part of an object
that you do not want to include. They are generally
indicated by a grey shape.
