ISSUES AND CONCERNS IN
THE SELECTION OF
SUBJECT CONTENT OF
CURRICULUM
INTRODUCTION
 Curriculum content is defined as the ways and means of achieving the prescribed
educational goals of a course of study.

 The curriculum content should be functional, aiming at promoting the all round
development of the children and helping them to lead an independent life and
integrate into the community.

 The selection of subject content of curriculum faces many issues .

PROBLEMS IN THE SELECTION OF
CURRICULUM CONTENT
 The Curriculum content is the ways and means of achieving the prescribed
educational goals of a course of study such as the subject to be studied, topics
or units and general concepts to be learned in each subject, projects and tasks
that are to be completed, knowledge and skills to be acquired and the
evaluation methods to assess the level of proficiency achieved in these.
 The selection of curriculum content for educational process is a challenging
task.
 By selecting the content of the curriculum, the priorities to be given, our
assumptions about what constitutes a Good Education, and the new society we
visualize through children by their education are spell out.
 In organizing the curriculum content, following the inter-disciplinary approach is
the best method.
 But the complication in it is the loss of the scope and specificity of the subjects
taught.
 In order to solve both these problems that is to protect the scope and specificity of
the educational disciplines.
 Accept the dilution of the power of the curriculum by following inter disciplinary
approach.
 The proper choice is to follow an Eclectic Approach, selecting and organizing the
curriculum content adopting effective interdisciplinary approach.
ORGANIZING CURRICULUM CONTENT
BASED ON EXPERIENCE OF
CHILDREN, THEIR NATURAL
CURIOSITIES, COMMUNITY
ENVIRONMENT AND THE
SPECIFICITIES OF SUBJECTS
 The ideal education is the one which not only care for the community in which
one lives, but also which produces knowledgeable and responsible citizens.
 The teachers who follow the environment inquiry approach will give
importance to the following four parts in their teaching . They are
a. Giving importance to the children’s experiences.
b. Providing opportunities to express their natural curiosities.
c. Making students to evince interest to understand, change and improve the
prevailing community environment
d. Developing in students the relevant knowledge, practical skills, attitudes and
values according to the nature of the subjects they study.
 These four elements will guide the teaching to be based on objectives, to
develop creativity and show concern and care in eradicating social
indisposition.
 Nurture the natural interests of the students and make them life long
learners.
 Community based personal identities like gender, caste, religion and
Class are important, they can also be oppressive and perpetuate
social hierarchy and social inequalities.
 Mutual sharing of social experience
 Improving their language skills
 Improving their social interaction
 Specificity of the subject should be preserved
