Raman Spectroscopy and National Science Day

National Science Day is celebrated in India on February 28th each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Sir C.V. Raman in 1928. The Raman effect is the inelastic scattering of light, resulting in shifts in the wavelength of monochromatic light passing through a medium. Raman spectroscopy has applications in medicine, biology, and materials science. It can be used to diagnose diseases, study biomolecules, and determine the structure of materials. The document discusses the Raman effect and spectroscopy, and provides an example of Raman spectra obtained from samples in the author's research work.

Why NSD is celebrated
 To spread a message about the importance of science
in our day to day life.

 To Present all the activities, efforts and achievements

in the field of science for human welfare.

 To discuss New technologies for the development in

the field of science.

 To provide New opportunities to the citizens of country

 To encourage the people to take part in new scientific

inventions

 TO popularize science and technology.

Why NSD is celebrated on February 28

 National Science Day is celebrated in

India on 28 February each year to mark
the discovery of the Raman effect by
Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28
February 1928.

 For his discovery, Sir C.V. Raman was

awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in
1930.

 The government of India elected 28

February as National Science Day (NSD) in
1986.
What is Raman Effect?
It is an inelastic scattering that refers to change in the Frequency /Wavelength of
light when passed through some medium.

2. Stokes Lines
Ѵ < Ѵi

3. AntiStokes Lines

Ѵ > Ѵi
Quantum theory of Raman Spectra.

According to quantum theory when a beam of monochromatic light of frequency Ѵi in

the form of photons each of energy h Ѵi strikes a molecule of sample.

Applications of Raman Spectroscopy
1.In medical field, Raman spectroscopy is used to diagnose
various disease tumor, cancer , Blood infection etc.

2. Biomolecules can also be directly sensed with Raman

spectroscopy, that enables a new understanding of DNA, proteins,
lipids, and carbohydrates in biological organisms.

3. In material science to determine the structure of molecules , bonds, crystallinity etc of

samples.
