AP Classes vs. Dual Enrollment
Dual Enrollment
AP Classes
● Students have experience with a college
● Colleges tend to award credit more easily based on setting while in high school.
AP test scores (typically 3 or higher) ● Save money towards earning a degree.
● Academically challenging classes ● Helps increase the weighted GPA.
● Out-of-state tuitions tend to look more favorably ● The student is the only one that can
on AP classes because the curriculum is familiar advocate for him or herself. Parents
● Helps increase weighted GPA. must be “hands off”.
● No guarantee college credit will be awarded by ● More variety of classes.
passing the class, student must achieve the ● Students are able to experience
required test score different campuses.
Dual-Enrollment Benefits & Considerations
(on track to graduate with an AA)
Benefits
● For in-state institutions, it can shorten the time to complete undergraduate degree.
● Students have experience with college scheduling and classes while in high school.
● Save money towards earning a degree.
● Ability to satisfy high school requirements as well as AA degree requirements.
Considerations
● There is no guarantee all credits will count for an AA degree earned while in high
school. It is up to the institution to decide how many credits they will accept.
● Can cause issues with future employment if the student is too young and has no job
experience.
● A major must be declared once student starts college. If student is unsure of what
they want to study, this can cause issues for them.
● Dual Enrollment is NOT a direct connect to any institution. Students must still apply
to the college as a first time college student, not a transfer student.
College Considerations
When asked what 4 year universities want in their applicants they continue to
reiterate rigorous courses and students taking advantage of all the possibly courses
the school offers.
They also want to see a math, science, English and social studies each year of high
school.
ENC1101 and ENC1102 both count as a full credit of English meaning if you take both
of them too soon you will need to take a literature or other type of English class to be
competitive your senior year. We recommend not speeding through and taking
ENC1101 and 1102 until Spring of Junior year.
AP English Language and Composition also can award credit for ENC1101 and
1102
Signing up for Classes and creating your LNHS Schedule
Once you have been accepted by Valencia you will need to complete the Valencia Orientation and
create an Atlas account you are able to begin creating your LNHS Schedule for the year:
4 Dual Enrollment or 12 credit hours= No required # of LNHS classes
Not recommended as full time DE students oftentimes miss out on testing dates, senior
events, scholarship opportunities and LNHS announcements if they are not regularly checking
their emails, school website, and Social Media.
3 Dual Enrollment or 9 credit hours=3 LNHS classes per semester
2 Dual Enrollment or 6 credit hours= 4 LNHS classes per semester
1 Dual Enrollment or 3 credit hours=5 LNHS classes per semester
This can be challenging to 9th/10th graders so we recommend 9th and 10th graders only taking 1-2 and
taking 5-6 classes here
Need to follow LNHS Bell Schedule paying special attention to Wednesday schedule
Need to be consecutive periods without holes.
Ex: taking 3 classes can be 1st-3rd, 3rd-5th, 5th-7th at LNHS for example
Senior Course Override
As a senior if you are close to earning an AA degree at Valencia, you are able to
request to take 5 courses per semester or more than 12 credit hours.
Ask your counselor for the override form and complete these steps
1. HS counselor emails form with their portion completed to DE (
[email protected])
a. Counselor will need to know what are your current post secondary
plans
2. DE verifies and contacts student to request the 1 or 2 additional courses
3. DE sends to district (if eligible)
4. District approves or denies
5. DE notifies counselor and student of district decision and next steps.
Considerations for picking classes
Need to follow LNHS Bell Schedule paying special attention to Wednesday schedule.
Cannot choose Flex courses with abbreviated start and end dates.
All classes need to run:
Fall: August 21-December 10
Spring: January 8-April 28
Summer classes can be either Summer A, Summer B, or Full Summer
Until you are 16 you will need to have a parent accompany you while on Valencia campus.
When not in classes you cannot be on LNHS campus unless for special designated reason
The periods you are on campus are the periods you are on campus for the year. If you take
morning classes at Valencia in the Fall, you need to select morning classes as well in the Spring
Many of the classes are offered virtually, but to really gain the full college experience taking
one of more Face to Face will provide this especially if you not a good online learner.
Meeting with Student Services
If taking classes in the Fall, you are welcome to come in anytime to meet with a counselor to go over
you schedule for next semester and review your classes.
Please bring a printed copy of your Student Detail Schedule making sure you know what LNHS
classes you plan to take and if you are taking your LNHS classes in the beginning or later part of the
day.
We will also go over where you stand with graduating HS
If you make any changes to your schedule after your meeting, you MUST let your counselor
know ASAP!!!!!!!!!
For your Spring schedule, you will need to schedule an appointment with your counselor before
classes begin. Spring Valencia registration begins in early November.
LNHS counselors cannot discuss requirements for an AA degree and students must meet with
Valencia DE coordinators or Valencia advisor
Academic and Disciplinary Behavior
When not in classes you cannot be on LNHS campus unless for special designated reason
You must adhere to OCPS Student Conduct policies and Valencia policies
Be aware of Add/Drop dates and Withdrawal deadline
The student can DROP a class anytime from when it is scheduled until the Drop
Deadline of a term. This is without penalty and will not be show his/her record.
Fall Drop Deadline:August 28, 2023
Spring Drop Deadline: January 16, 2024
You are only allowed one withdrawal (W) while in the DE program so please before
W/D from a class speak to your School Counselor. A second withdrawal will result in
dismissal from the program.
If you W/D or drop a class you will be required to pick up an additional LNHS class to
compensate for the Valencia period.
Textbooks and Materials
If you are keeping your OCPS-issued laptop remember to periodically check for updates on
LNHS campus.
As a DE student you are not required to pay for any textbooks or materials as part of the
courses.
Current policy is to order books directly from the Valencia
bookstore:https://valenciacollege.edu/admissions/dual-enrollment/textbook-information.php
For UF, we will provide only the required texts associated with the course. You are welcome to
purchase any additional or suggested materials on your own.
For UCF, the district also covers the cost of the materials and you are able to pick up the
materials for the UCF Bookstore.
At the end of each semester students are required to return all materials to the LNHS Media
Center
Remaining in Good Standing with LNHS and DE
DE students must maintain the minimum GPA requirement for each of the
programs they are in:
Valencia 3.0 HS GPA (unweighted for 9-11); 2.0 Valencia GPA
UF 3.6 unweighted
UCF 3.8 as determined by UCF
Please remember, with any DE classe you have started for college transcript
and GPA, so taking DE classes requires thought and dedication that goes far
beyond high school.
