Schlumberger-Private
Application of Density and PEF

 PEF (Photo Electric Factor) is an indicator of lithology.

 Density can also be used to calculate a Porosity.

Schlumberger-Private
 Based on the assumption
 b = . f + (1- ) ma
Knowing ma and f

  = (ma - b )/ (ma - f )

 Porosity - Neutron Porosity
 Caliper - Ultra Sonic Caliper

15 DRILLING & MEASUREMENTS | LEARNING CENTERS

Schlumberger-Private
Neutron Porosity Measurement Principle

 The source emits neutrons.

 These neutrons interact with the Far Detector
formation. Thermal Neutrons

Schlumberger-Private
 The returning neutrons are
counted at the detectors. Near Detector
 Detector count rate gives an
idea of Neutron Porosity.

16 DRILLING & MEASUREMENTS | LEARNING CENTERS

Schlumberger-Private
Application of Neutron Porosity Measurements

 The amount of returning neutrons is largely dependent on hydrogen present in the

mud and in the formation.

Schlumberger-Private
 Hydrogen only occurs in the fluid in the pore spaces and in the drilling mud, not in
the rock matrix.

 If we can accurately measure the hydrogen in the formation then we have a

measurement of porosity.

Schlumberger-Private
Ultrasonic (US) Caliper

 Ultrasonic Pulses fired from Sensor

 Echo detected from formation
 Standoff computed by measuring the time for

Schlumberger-Private
echo to return ( given the velocity of sound in
the fluid)
 “Just like a bat in a cave”

Schlumberger-Private
Application of the US Measurement

 The US measurement is used to compute hole size.

 This is used in wellbore stability, completions and drilling optimization and safety.
