Activity:
Imagine that you just
returned from your travel to
the center of the Earth.
Describe in your journal
what you have experienced as
you journeyed to the depths
of the planet.
Layers of the Earth
Lithosphere
• It comprises the crust and the
uppermost layer of the mantle
Asthenosphere
• Found below the lithosphere
which is about 180 km thick
and contains magma.
• It can be deform and reshape
under the heat from the
magma.
Four Major Layers of the Earth
• Crust
• Mantle
• Outer Core
• Inner Core
Crust
• It is the layer of the Earth
where life exists.
• It is composed of major and
minor blocks of rocks, which is
referred as tectonic plates.
• It makes up the continents,
which is called the Continental
Crust and is about 40 - 70 km
thick.
Crust
• It underlies the ocean floor
which is called as Oceanic
Crust, which has an average
thickness of 5 km.
• It is largely composed of
alumina and silica.
Mantle
• It is a semisolid, rocky, and very
hot layer of the Earth.
• It measures about 2,900 km thick,
it makes up 80% of the Earth and
carries most of its mass.
• It composed of ferro -
magnesium silicate rocks.
• Its top layer has a temperature of
about 900°C, as it goes deeper
the temperature increases from
1,000°C to 3,700°C.
Outer Core
• It is located below the mantle.
• It is the only liquid layer of
the Earth made up of molten
nickel and iron.
• It is about 2,270 km thick and
has a temperature that ranges
from 3,700°C to 4,300°C.
Inner Core
• It is the solid center of the
planet.
• It has a diameter of about
1,220 km thick and is
composed mostly of solid iron,
which gives the planet its
magnetic characteristics
• Its temperature has been
recently found to be about
6,000°C.
Interfaces mark the
boundaries between
the layers of the Earth.
Mohorovicic Discontinuity
• It is alson known as Moho.
• It is the interface between the
crust and the mantle.
Gutenberg Discontinuity
• It marks the boundary
between the mantle and the
outer core.
Lehman Discontinuity
• It is located between the liquid
outer core and the solid inner
core.
