WHAT IS IT?
There are over 6000 languages spoken in the world. And behind each and every one of them lies a rich and diverse culture. Thats what the European Day of Languages (EDL) aims to celebrate by showing people across Europe how important languages are, and what fun can be had learning them.
September the 26th is the important day. Set up by the Council of Europe, it was first celebrated in 2001 and its getting bigger every year, now with 45 countries involved.

What are we curriculum EDL across the doing today to celebrate EDL?
Every lesson will have an activity related to languages for 10-15 minutes
You will play by house teams Your teachers will collect your scores to be added up toghether.
The EDL competition winning house will be announced in assembly. These points will be added to the overall Interhouse Trophey
My favourite word
Foreign language students have been creating little posters with their favourite word in the foreign language The best will be given a little prize. They will be displayed at the exhibition and then on the MFL board for the whole half-term
There is a wide range of languages spoken in Europe. Most of them belong to 4 language families It is easier to learn a language of the same family
It is important to know and be aware of other cultures in Europe if we want to achieve the European spirit of integration. As a countries culture its expressed in the native language let us try to learn a bit about all European languages today.
The MFL Department hopes this programme contributes to broaden your knoledge of European languages But also that you enjoy it!
