Mandarin Pinyin Chart

Pinyin is the romanization system for Mandarin Chinese. It uses letters of the Latin alphabet to represent the sounds of Mandarin. The pinyin system includes initial consonants, vowels, tones and rules for placing tone marks. Tone marks are placed above vowels or, if no vowel, above the letter before it to indicate the four tones of Mandarin pronunciation. How 4 tones are presented

Where to put the tone marks?

1. A tone mark is typically placed over a vowel: e.g.,: nǐ , wǒ

2. If you see ‘a’, don’t let it off – place the tone marker over the ‘a’

3. If there is no ‘a’, look for ‘o’ and ‘e’

4. If “i” and “u” are side by side, place it [ the tone mark] on the last one.

5. If the tone mark is above “i”, remove the dot and replace with the tone
mark
