DISASTER READINESS RISK
AND REDUCTION
WHAT’S UP WITH
PHILIPPINES, WHAT’S
THE NEED FOR YOU
TO LEARN THE
SUBJECT?
DISASTER READINESS RISK AND REDUCTION
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
• Explain what a hazard is;
• Define the two main categories (Natural and
Man-made) of hazards; and
• Identify the impact of hazards common in the
environment
DISASTER READINESS RISK AND REDUCTION
NATURAL PROCESSES:
• Plate tectonics- leading to mountain building,
volcanism, ocean formation etc.
• Atmospheric processes- formation of clouds,
precipitation
• Biological accumulation-increasingly large number of
fish contaminated by mercury
• Human activities- urbanization, extracting sources,
geoengineering etc.
TYPHOON _ _ _ _ _?
“Philippines is one of the most
hazardous countries in the world,
having more than 20 tropical
cyclones in a year, earthquake
everyday, and more than 20
active volcanoes found all over
the country”
WHAT IS A HAZARD?
WHAT IS A DISASTER?
HAZARD is a dangerous phenomenon,
substance, human activity or condition that
may cause loss of life, injury or other health
impacts, property damage, loss of livelihood
and services, social and economic
disruption, or environmental damage.
DISASTER is a serious disruption of the functioning of a
community or a society involving widespread human,
material, economic, or environmental losses and
impacts which exceeds the ability of the affected
community or society to cope using its own resources.
Objective 2: Identify the 2 main categories of
hazards
NATURAL HAZARDS MAN-MADE HAZARDS
These are naturally-occurring physical These are hazards originating from
phenomena caused either by rapid or slow technological
onset events.

INTRODUCTION TO
DISASTER
CONCEPTS
Learning competencies to be
achieved in this lesson:
1.Explain the meaning of disaster.
2.Differentiate the risk factors underlying
Disasters.
3.Describe the effects of disasters on one’s life.

corona virus pandemic can go beyond our current healthcare system capacity.

A DISASTER is a calamitous event,
especially one occurring suddenly and An EMERGENCY is a sudden, urgent,
causing great loss of life, damage or unexpected event requiring immediate
hardship. action, usually requiring help.

RISK SOURCES
-Elements which alone or in combination
has the potential to give rise to risk.
RISK POTENTIAL EVENTS
FACTORS -Occurrences or changes of a particular
set of circumstances
UNDERLYING CONSEQUENCES
-outcomes of an event affecting
DISASTER objectives.
LIKELIHOOD
-chance of something happening.
