Functions and Evaluating Functions

This document discusses functions and how to evaluate them. It defines a function as a special type of relation where each element of the domain corresponds to exactly one element of the range. To evaluate a function graphically, it uses the vertical line test and horizontal line test, where a graph represents a function only if no vertical or horizontal line intersects the graph at more than one point. It also discusses how to evaluate functions given an ordered pair, table of values, equation, or graph.

FUNCTIONS AND

EVALUATING
FUNCTIONS

WHAT IS A FUNCTION?
z
WHAT IS A FUNCTION?

As we go through our everyday

activities, we encounter pairs of
quantities that related to each
other by some rule of
correspondence.
z
WHAT IS A FUNCTION?

 The mathematical term for such a rule of

correspondence is so called relation.
For example,
1. A social security number is related to the
identity of a person, or;
2. The relation of the final grade of a student
to the exams, assignment, and projects.
z
WHAT IS A FUNCTION?

A relation is a collection of ordered pair.

And such relation is called function.

z

DEFINITION OF FUNCTION

It is a relation defined as a set of

ordered pairs (x, y) where no two or
more distinct ordered pairs have the
same first element (x).
z
DEFINITION OF FUNCTION

 a relation in w/c each element of the domain

corresponds to exactly one element of the range
 a set of ordered pairs in w/c no two ordered –
pairs have the same first component but
different second components.
z
What is the difference between
a Function and a Relation?
 RELATION

- A relation is a set of ordered pairs (x, y).

 FUNCTION

- A function is a set of ordered pairs (x, y)

such that no two ordered pairs have the same
x-value but different y-values.
z

This function can be also presented by ordered pairs:

{

The uniqueness of the image of an

element domain is crucial.
z

PUT IN MIND
“Every function is a
relation, but not all relation
is a function.”
z

QUESTIONS?
Another way of evaluating a
z

function if you are given a

graph or an equation is so
called the VERTICAL LINE
TEST and HORIZONTAL LINE
TEST.
z
What is Vertical and Horizontal
Line Test?
It is a set of points in a coordinate
plane wherein the graph of as a
function of if and only if no vertical
and horizontal line intersects the
graph at more than one point.
z

FUNCTION OR NOT A FUNCTION?

FUNCTION OR NOT A FUNCTION?

z

PUT IN MIND!

To evaluate a graph, draw only

one vertical line and horizontal
line to any part of the given
graph.
z

ORDERED - PAIR

A = { (1, 2), (2, 5), (3, 10), (4, 7)}

B = {(a, b), (c, d), (e, f), (g, h)}
C = {(1, 2), (3, 9), (5, 12)}

 RELATION: A set of ordered pair

 DOMAIN: Element of x

 RANGE: Element of y

EVALUATING A FUNCTION

It is the process of determining

the value of the function at the
number assigned to a given
variable.
