Formulating
the Research
Questions
After selecting your topic, the next thing is to
identify your research problem.
• Research questions are important components of your research which
will help define the research problem that your study also intends to
answer. The following are classification of the research problem:
1. General research question- derived from the main problem of
the study. Must contain words related to quantitative research, such
as effects or relationships. Words like who, when, or where shall not
be placed in the general research question as these elicit factual
questions that may not require extensive investigation and
discussion.
2. Specific research questions- anchored on the general questions.
Helps in developing tools for collecting data, gathering related
references, organizing papers, and drawing valid conclusions from
finding. How you write the specific questions depends on the type of
quantitative research you do.

problem questions
Descriptive research
• Focus: observe and report on the measurable aspects of a
phenomenon.
• Can begin with phrases like how often, how frequently, how
many, how much, what is/are, to what extent, what
proportion, and what percentage.
• Sample study: Group of science teachers' usage of FGD
1. How often do science teachers use FGD in one week?
2. How many hours do science teachers use FGD per week?
3. What proportion of male and female science teachers use
FGD?
Correlational research
• Focus: finding relationships among two or more variables.
• Can begin with “is there a relationship” or “What is the
relationship”
• Sample study: length of preparation for examinations and the
scores obtained by LET takers
1. What is the relationship between the length of the review and
examination scores?
2. Is there a relationship between the IQ of a LET taker and
his/her performance in review sessions?
3. Is there a relationship between the performance of a LET-
taker in a previous examination and the length pf review
he/she takes for a new one?
Ex Post Facto research
• Focus: to discover the cause/s of a phenomenon. This cause has already occurred or taken effect
on the subject before the conduct of the study or has not been introduced in the study itself.
• The presumed cause that exists even before the study is undertaken must be incorporated into the
research questions.
• Sample study: digital literacy and the type of information technology education that science
learners obtain
1. Are information technology education science students digitally literate?
2. Using the four components of digital literacy, what can be identified as the strengths and
weaknesses of information technology education science learners and vocational technology
students?
3. Is there a difference between the digital literacy scores of information technology education
science learners?
Quasi and Experimental research
• Focus: suggest a stronger causal relationship among variables. A
causal relationship is linked to the manipulation of a certain
variable during the study itself.
• Can have quantitative or qualitative elements but the first two
questions must be quantitative.
• Sample study: tutorial sessions and science academic performance
1. Is there a significant posttest gain on students’ science academic
performance?
2. Is there a difference between the posttest gains of the control
group and the treatment group?
3. How do science students rate their experiences in one-on-one
tutorial sessions?
The Effect of Singapore Science Approach on
Improving the NAT Performance of Filipino
Students in Science
• General research question:
The present study aims to determine the effect of the Singapore Science
approach on improving the NAT performance of Filipino students in
Science. Specifically, this study aims to answer the following research
questions:
• Specific research questions:
1. What is the NAT performance of Filipino students in Science?
2. What is the NAT performance of Filipino students in Science who used
the Singapore Science approach?
3. Is there a significant difference in the NAT performance of Filipino
students in Science before and after the Singapore science approach?
