• Dr. Jose Rizal first Novel published in 1887 – it
considered one of the most important written
outputs at the height of his intellectual endeavors in
Europe.
• The context of its publication was during the Spanish
colonial period in the Philippines, where the country
was under the oppressive rule of the Spanish
government and the Catholic Church.
Noli Me Tangere Context
- The Spanish authorities also held immense power
and control over the Filipino people, including their
culture, religion, and education.
- Rizal, who was well-educated and well-traveled, was
deeply aware of the social injustices and corruption
prevalent in Philippine society, and he used his
writing as a medium to express his grievances and
advocate for social reforms.
- Many of his biographers cite several works that
influenced Rizal in writing of Noli Me Tangere one of
these is Juan Luna’s painting Spoliarium, which
depicted the suffering faced by the humanity in the
face inequality.
