SCIENCE
(Earth Science)
May 15, 2023
(Week 7, Day 2)
OPENING
PRAYER
(Sign of the
Cross)
Dear Creator God,
Today I’m seeking to understand more about you and the way
you made the world. I know your thoughts are as high above mine
as the heavens are above the earth, but I also know you love to fill
us with your wisdom when we ask for it.
I come to you knowing you have all
the power and authority. It is only when I
fear you and place my mind under yours
that I can really know anything.
OPENING
Remembering you is also what I need to develop theories and think
through how to use the facts I uncover.
Thank you, Jesus, for being the root and foundation of science.
Thank you for translating God’s truth into a language we can
understand.
Please guide my thoughts and actions
to the best ways to uncover the truth.
Bless me with wisdom to see what
natural people would never dream of
looking for.
OPENING
Most of all, Lord God, I ask that all I discover
may reveal more of your glory. May we recognize
in a deeper way your genius, orderliness, and
beauty.
For yours is the kingdom,
the power, and the glory
forever.
Amen.

“EARTH’S NATURAL
RESOURCES”
( NONRENEWABLE & RENEWABLE )
What are
natural
resources?
NATURAL
RESOURCES
- These are materials
that can be used to
support life and, at
the same time ,
provide energy for
living things.
NATURAL RESOURCES
- These resources are either
supplied by the sun or by the
Earth’s natural process.
- The total environment –
Atmosphere, Lithosphere
and Hydrosphere
Where Does
Energy Come
From?
SUNLIGHT
- It produces heat that moves the wind
onto the surface and drives waves and
currents in the seas and ocean.
- Sunlight is the power behind various
weather phenomena that we experience,
which determines climate of different
areas on Earth.
- It sustains life and cannot be recycled.
Example: Photosynthesis
What are the
different types
of Energy
Resources
TYPES OF NATURAL RESOURCES:
Renewable
and
Nonrenewable
Resources
RENEWABLE RESOURCES
Renewable resources are natural resources
that can be replenished in a short period of
time.
• These are the • Solar Energy
resources that • Geothermal Energy
can be used • Wind Energy
readily and can
• Biomass Energy
be regenerated
repeatedly • Water/Hydroelectric
Energy
NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural
resource that cannot be re-made or re-
grown at a scale comparable to its
consumption.
What are the
other Energy
Resources?
RESOURCES FOUND IN LITHOSPHERE
❑ ROCKS – These are important building
materials. It contain substances that are
of a great economic value.
❑ MINERALS – Are naturally formed elements
and organic compounds whose atoms &
molecules are bound together in a definite
arrangement to form crystals.
SOLAR
ENERGY
- “ENERGY FROM THE SUN”
- Sun is 150 million km (1 A.U)
away from Earth.
- Solar Energy may become
viable alternative to oil as a
source of power.
- Unlike oil, solar energy does not
pollute the air or contribute to
GLOBAL WARMING.
Example: Solar Panel
WIND ENERGY
- “ENERGY FROM THE WIND”
- An energy from the wind by
building a tall tower, with a large
propeller on the top.
- The wind blows the propeller
round, which turns a generator
to produce electricity.
- BANGUI, ILOCOS PROVINCE –
50m (tall), 40% of the energy
provided.
Example: Windmill
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY
- “HEAT COMING FROM THE
EARTH”
- Greek word “geo” means “earth”,
and “thermal” means “heat”.
- Hot rocks underground heat
ground water to produce
“STEAM”. Steam is then purified
and used to drive turbines which
drives electric generators to
produce electricity underground.
Example: Geothermal Power Plant
HYDROELECTRIC
- “ENERGY FROM WATER”
- Hydroelectric gets its energy
from flowing water.
- A dam is usually built a trap to
water.
- Water is allowed to flow in
tunnels in the dam to turn
turbines and drive generators.
- It can produce a great deal of
power very cheaply.
Example: Hydroelectric Power
BIOMASS ENERGY
- “ENERGY FROM ORGANIC
MATERIALS”
- Biomass is matter usually thought as
a garbage.
- It includes dead trees, leftover crops,
wood chips, bark and saw dust,
rubbish, corn stalk and animal
manure.
- The process of harnessing energy
from biomass involves the gathering
of waste materials to be delivered in a
biomass power plant.
Example: Biomass Power Plant
1. 2. HEAT 3. STEAM 4. TURBINES 5.
WATER TO MAKES MAKES ELECTRICAL
BURN TURBINES
MAKE GENERATOR POWER
BIOMASS MOVES WORKS
STEAM
NUCLEAR ENERGY
• Nuclear power is the use
of nuclear reactions that
release nuclear energy to
generate heat, which most
frequently is then used in
steam turbines to produce
electricity in a nuclear
power plant.
• As a nuclear technology,
nuclear power can be
obtained from nuclear
fission, nuclear decay and
nuclear fusion reactions.
NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
A nuclear power
plant or nuclear power
station is a thermal power
station in which the heat
source is a nuclear reactor.
As it is typical of
thermal power stations,
heat is used to generate
steam that drives a steam
turbine connected to a
generator that produces
electricity.
FOSSIL FUELS
COAL, PETROLEUM, AND GAS
Coal, petroleum, and
natural gas are
considered
nonrenewable because
they can not be
replenished in a short
period of time. These
are called fossil fuels.
HOW IS COAL MADE ???
HOW ARE OIL AND GAS MADE ???
WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN COAL AND OIL/GAS?
Example: Fossil Fuel Production

resource for the Philippines.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
As we come to the end of our time together we thank you
for what has been accomplished here today.
May the matters discussed serve as a catalyst to move us
forward and cause us to advance and see growth in all areas of
our lives.
May we leave here recognizing You are the God of all
wisdom and You are willing to lead us forward.
This we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Amen.
THANK YOU FOR LISTENING! ☺
