Introduction

Mosquitoes are a common pest in our community. They are known to cause dengue fever,

malaria and chikingunya. Mosquitoes are living things that transmit diseases between animals and

humans, they often transmit infections through blood to be passed on. This creature is classified as

bloodsuckers, normal mosquito terrains is any place with standing water, including natural habitats

such as ponds, swamps, plants or trees, as well as artificial water containers such as abandoned tires,

flower pots, buckets, or discarded toys that are gradually present for every community.

Scope and Delimitation

The research “Acceptability of Pomelo Peel as Mosquito Coil Paper” only focused on the following

scope and delimitation. Meanwhile, investigatory research was used to determine the effectiveness of the

Mosquito Coil Paper using Pomelo Peel.

The experimental research was conducted on April 2023, wherein the respondents are the said

teachers of CSAT Senior High Schooland the researchers’ family. The researchers sought a more diverse

outcome for validity.

It determined the Acceptability of the Pomelo Peel as Mosquito Coil Paper and the study was

conducted through survey questionnaire. Quantitative analysis was utilized to analyze and interpret the data.

10/03/2023 PRESENTATION TITLE 6

Significance of Study
This research study could be a help as an eye-opener for both parents and children as the outcome of the

study offered them a comfort product to use as their daily coil to their households and the pomelo fruit are

guaranteed to be safe and sound in children respiratory organs.

This study is beneficial to the community because of its free factors, the finished product won’t deliver

any poisonous gases to the air which make the local area completely secure to any sort of side effects.

Moreover, This research also contributes to future researches inclined on social waste management and

related topics. It acts as a platform for either new research or the advancement of the current research itself.

10/03/2023 PRESENTATION TITLE 7

Review of Related Literature
On this chapter, related literature and studies are organized to relate to the current study

conducted based on some research relating to the topic, to back it up with a strong

foundation.

Food Chemistry, 129247, 2021 Pomelo peel as a by-product from pomelo consumption

is rich in various nutrients and functional compounds, while most of the by-product is

disposed as wastes. The utilization of pomelo peels could not only result in valued-added

products/ingredients, but also reduce the environmental threats.

10/03/2023 PRESENTATION TITLE 8

Review of Related Literature
The control of mosquito vectors and reducing the transmission of human pathogens are based on the chemical

insecticides, especially chemical repellents. Thus, chemical repellents are a useful of reducing and preventing

the mosquito vectors, deterring an insect from flying and landing, and biting human and animal skin.

Unfortunately, chemical repellents are not safe for human, especially children because they may cause skin

irritation, hot sensation rashes or allergy (Das et al., 2003), such as DEET (N,N-diethyl-M-methyl benzamide)

and IR3535 (ethyl butyl acetyl amino propionate) may be unsafe for children possibly causing encephalopathy

(Abdel-Rahman et al., 2001). Besides, DEET is also know to damage plastic and synthetic materials (Kang et

al., 2009).

Review of Related Literature
Additionally, Malar J 10, S11 (2011). Plant-based coils have been used for generations in traditional practice as

a personal protection measure against host-seeking mosquitoes. Knowledge on traditional repellent plants

obtained through ethnobotanical studies is a valuable resource for the development of new natural products.

Recently, commercial repellent products containing plant-based ingredients have gained increasing popularity

among consumers, as these are commonly perceived as “safe” in comparison to long-established synthetic

repellents although this is sometimes a misconception. To date insufficient studies have followed standard

WHO Pesticide Evaluation Scheme guidelines for repellent testing. There is a need for further standardized

studies in order to better evaluate repellent compounds and develop new products that offer high repellency as

well as good consumer safety

Review of Related Literature
Another point is according to Ahjeet Sing and Navneet (2017) Ethno-botanical and traditional uses of natural

compounds, mainly of plant origin established much interest as they are well tested for their efficacy and

generally believed to be safe for human use. The extracts of different parts might be added value in the

scientific evolution of medicinal application of C. Maxima. Extensive literature survey revea cled many

pharmacological properties includes antimicrobial, anthelmintic antioxidant, antidiabetic, and central nervous

system activity, hepatoprotective, and anticancer activities vgnrof the extract and isolated molecules of

34Citrus maxima (Brum) Mer. The conversion of these pharmacological activities into the modern drugs,

proper scientific evolution includes isolation of answerable phytochemicals, their mechanism of actions and

appropriate standardization need to be explored.

For the future investigations, the functionality- or bioactivity-oriented regimes

to recovery valuable components from pomelo peel should be developed in an

economic, effective and eco-friendly way and their applicability in large-scale

production should be addressed.

Furthermore, pomelo peel has the ability to benefits in a lot of matter

Meanwhile a study was conducted to compare the effectiveness of pomelo (Citrus maxima)

as mosquioto coil and the commercial mosquito repellant of mosquitoes by Jochel F. Almas,

Analyn S. Alumit and Louisa F. Laron (2021), it sought to determine the best pomelo extract

concentration in the repellence of mosquitoes.

The research findings showed the effects of the different treatments in repelling mosquitoes

are highly significant. Furthermore, the 100% pomelo peeling extract concentration and

commercial mosquito repellant are not significantly different from each other.

10/03/2023 PRESENTATION TITLE 13

Review of Related Literature
With the reference to the study of Jochel F. et al., (2021) It concluded that the different

treatments of the pomelo peeling extract concentration can repel mosquitoes. Moreover, the

100% pomelo peeling extract concentration is as effective as the commercial mosquito

repellant in repelling mosquitoes.

Limonene is the oil extracted from the peels of citrus fruits people have been

Review of Related Literature
Turning to the study of Dr. Renuka Verma (2018) Limonene affects insects on contact, effectively suffocating

them by damaging their respiratory systems. Many insects such as roaches, ants and silverfish do not care for

the scent of orange oil and will avoid it. Placing bits of orange peel or zest around the garden repels flies and

mosquitoes. Rubbing orange peel on the skin is a home remedy for preventing mosquito bites.

Plant-based repellents have been applied for generations in traditional practice as a personal protection

approach against different species of Anopheles. Knowledge of traditional repellent plants is a significant

resource for the development of new natural products as an alternative to chemical repellents. Many studies

have reported evidence of repellant activities of plant extracts or essential oils against malaria vectors

worldwide.(Asadollahi, 2019)

Review of Related Literature
Pomelo (Citrus maxima) shows a great mosquito repellent activity due to its major active constituent, Limonene.Citrus

peels are rich in essential oils and exhibit toxicity towards various insect species. The essential oils are also an eco-friendly

option for insect pest management. The Citrus maxima peel essential oil (CMEO), a waste product, characterized it, and

evaluated its potential for insect pest management. The major terpenoids present in CMEO are Limonene and α-Pinene. The

CMEO displayed potentials in controlling the insect pests via contact and fumigant toxicity. Moreover, CMEO showed

significant larvicidal activities against Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Aedes aegypti species of mosquitoes; however,

Armigeres subalbatus was more resistant. The biological safety of the essential oil was also tested against the stored seeds,

where no significant inhibition of seed germination was noticed compared to the control. Utilizing a waste product such as

citrus peel for pest management can achieve the dual objective of waste utilization and eco-friendly pest management.

Overall, the CMEO is therefore found to be a bioactive essential oil extracted from the wastes of pomelo (C. maxima).
