TREND can be defined in may ways:
In the field of arts, fashion, and music,
trend is a prevailing style or preference
such as realism movement in art,
emergence of the miniskirt, and
popularity of jazz music.
In economics, trend is a general
movement registering statistical changes
for a long period such as the increasing
cost of living and rate of unemployment.

In politics, trend refers to the
tendency, drift, or bend toward a certain
stance, thought, or policy as when
democratic Southeast Asian countries
favored authoritarian governments at a
certain point in their historians. Other
areas also prevailing preferences such in
sports, food, medicine, cosmetics,
travel, manufacturing, and environmental
management.

A pattern of behavior
demonstrated by a big
number of people within a
particular period.
TREND is also …
A “look that has the appeal of
newness because it has been missing
or scarce in the marketplace. It
occurs when there is a building of
awareness on this new idea and its
presence produces an increasing
demand or need for that idea among
consumers. (Brannon, 2000, 6-7),
Another type of trend according to
Brannon, is the consumption a of
product that shows continuous use
and appeal of the product among its
consumers because of its
effectiveness, popularity, high
market demand, and influence over a
sustained period of time.
Sociologists also viewed trend as
“collective behavior or mass involvement
that is acceptable to society and shows
a line of historically continuity as it
can be downplayed today but can
resurface sometime in the future”.
HOW TO SPOT
A TREND???
The act or event is something
different from what is currently
going on and it becomes “the next big
thing”. It demonstrated an
accelerated spread among various
sectors and areas and created a deep
and wide scope of influence on
people, sectors, and the environment.
It leads to change.
A cool-hunting is the hunt for
those things that will become
popular before they are popular.
Trend analysis, is based on
trendspotting but it extends this
into developing future scenarios.

Trend Analysis - Is an examination of these
phenomenon and speculations on the likely impact they
will have in the future. Any given phenomenon and
prediction which likely to happen or any craze/fad or
trend that would likely emerge needs to be examined.

b. Trends use overwhelming recognition and
pattern identification to create presages in
knowing the future.
c. Trends evolution are being evaluated and
observed by the use of timeframes.

1.Adopt a beginner’s mind – an individual should
know how to unlearn things.
2.Know why and what you are looking for – what was
your reason why you are looking or spotting a
trend
3.Move and search in many places – go out of your
comfort zone. Look for beyond what and where
others are looking and searching at.

4. Beware of the obvious – no to “BANDWAGON” of the
obvious – (flashy things)
5. Never judge something as good or bad – be
objective not subjective
6. Be sensitive in looking for signals - study how
trends gain momentum. Not all things new and novel
can became a trend, but they sometimes do.

7. Look for shifts rather than novelties - observe
for changes in how things are done or in people’s
behaviors when something new is introduced.
8. Spot for combinations of things - do not think
of trends as a singular evolution or development of
things
9. Find the reason for something - seek logical
explanations and causes for everything.
