Approaches to
Understanding the
Relationship of the
Human Person with
the Environment
Before we start, let’s have an
activity:
1. List the things that you did the whole day today. Take
note of the products you used, the things you bought,
the things you threw away. Which among them do you
think had an impact on the environment (either
positive or negative)?
2. Looking back at your activities today, what would you
have done otherwise to reverse whatever you did that
harmed the environment?
The task of a Philosophy Student in relation to
the environment issues is to examine his or her
assumptions and taken-for-granted attitude
towards this problem. As you have learned in
Lesson 2, your understanding of reality and
truth rests on a background that more or less
follows a particular approach. In this lesson ,
you are tasked to take a step back and
critically examine the approach that influences
your attitude with regard to the environment.
Cosmo-centric
Approach:
In earlier civilizations,
human beings
understood themselves
as part and in harmony
with nature. Specifically,
the cosmos which we are
part of. Early Greek and
Chinese Philosophers
have articulated this
harmony in their poetry
and reflections.
Cosmo-centric
Approach
Pertaining to Taoism,
this concept is also
referred to as energy.
Believing that
everything is Qi or
energy. Such as water
cycles, condensation,
water to ice. Moreover,
Yin and Yang create
balance to the
universe.
Cosmo-centric
Approach
If there is an
imbalance of such,
then the other
element dominates
and surpasses the
encompassing
power. Which
affects other
existent things.
Cosmo-centric
Approach
Humans can also affect
balance in the
environment. If there is
too much Yang in the
person it means there is
too much expenditure of
energy such as
aggression, greed, vanity,
And other forms of
imbalance.
Cosmo-centric
Approach
If there is too much
Yin (indifference,
idleness or laziness)
there is no regard
for the preservation
of earth’s
Resources.
Cosmo-centric
Approach
Therefore, Cosmo-
centric aids to
enlighten us with
the elements of
balance and what
can cause it to be
stable or unstable,
too much or lacking
of.
Theocentric
Approach
Refers to an
understanding coming a
religious interpretation.
Such as after creation of
the world
miscellaneously, God
said “Go to the world
and multiply” signifying
trust as stewards of
creation.
Theocentric
Approach
We are given a power to
make use of what has
been given to us. But
this power comes with
responsibility and duty
to take care of the gift
(Pope Francis). As such
we are it’s co-creators.
Theocentric
Approach
Although we may be
able to trace the roots
of environmental issues,
it is futile to recognize
such without
acknowledging our own
mistakes that
exacerbates it.
The
Anthropocentric
Approach
Anthropos (man) +
centric, emphasizes
human domination
above all living
things. Downgrading
value of religion and
Gods based on
particular systems
of belief.
The
Anthropocentric
Approach
It is primarily
swayed by
scientific
evidence and
calculations that
deters god-
belief.
The
Anthropocentric
Approach
The bad side:
Humans tend to
abuse the knowledge
obtained through
years of study and
researching that logs
important
information of these
things around us.
The
Anthropocentric
Approach
Humans lack
environmental
awareness and
responsibility: which
results to
destruction and
consistent
incremental
damages up to the
contemporary time.
NOTE!
-It is important to maintain the
mentioned elements and aspects
for balance and safety of not just
ourselves but also for the
environment in which we live in!
