Compare &

Contrast Essay

Points to Consider When

Writing an Expository
Essay
WHAT IS YOUR PURPOSE
• In a compare - contrast essay it is to present the similarities and
differences between two things
• Choose a topic you want to focus on (e.x. food)
• Pre-write sub-categories to help determine your purpose (ex. fresh food,
canned food)
• With your purpose you are now ready to write your thesis statement.
THESIS STATEMENT

• A short and easy to read sentence that states

your intentions for comparing and contrasting
items and how they should be looked at.
• The rest of the essay will support this
statement
ARRANGEMENTS IN ESSAYS

Block Arrangements
• Each sub-category is discussed in separate paragraphs giving
details to show the important points (two or three points) for each
category.

• Block arrangement type essays can be written as four paragraph

essays when comparing and contrasting two categories.
ARRANGEMENTS IN ESSAYS

Point - by - Point Arrangements

• For example on the topic of food, our three body paragraphs will
focus on the three points (flavor, cost, health) we associate with each
food category (fresh food, canned food).
• Point-by-point arrangement type essays can be written as five
paragraph essays when comparing and contrasting the three points
associated with the two sub-categories.

your thesis statement

AN EXAMPLE THESIS STATEMENT

There are many advantages to

purchasing fresh fruit and
vegetables as an alternative to
popular canned food items at your
local supermarket.
BODY PARAGRAPHS - STATE YOUR IDEAS
• Clearly state your idea by using a topic sentence at the
beginning of the paragraph

Example: A bag of apples might cost more than

canned apples, but savings in health costs far
outweigh the immediate savings at the cash
register.
BODY PARAGRAPHS - USE TRANSITION
WORDS OFTEN
• Transition words help connect arguments together.

For example; While purchasing canned food is

cheaper and more convenient, the flavor may be
diminished because of all the extra chemicals
needed to add to the products' shelf life.
CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH - PARAPHRASE
THE INTRODUCTION
• Paraphrasing means to restate using different words.
• Use different words when restating the thesis statement

Example: Many people forget that when they buy

something that is canned, they are also buying the
packaging.
CONCLUSION PARAGRAPH - POWERFUL
CLOSING
• Leave the reader thinking about what you said
• You can end with an intriguing statement or question

Example; Choosing the right foods to eat

reaps benefits to our health, taste buds, and
in the end will be the most cost saving
decision that will only add joy to our
retirement years.
