Types of proposals
Proposals are of two types:
• External Proposal-In external proposal, one firm responds to a
request from another firm or the government for a solution to a
problem. It ranges from lengthy (100 pages or more) to a short
(4-5 pages).
• Internal Proposal-In an internal proposal, an employee of the
department urges someone else in the company to accept an
idea or to fund equipment on research.

What to include in the sections
• The proposal starts with ‘To’, ‘From’ and ‘Date’.
• It states the name of the writer, the name of the person the proposal
is addressed to, the name of organisation and the proposal deadline
• The proposal must have a subject or title.
• The First section is the Executive summary. It clearly mentions the
content of the technical, managerial and financial sections in a
convincing manner.
• The second section is the Introduction. Give some background
information about proposal and also clearly mention the course of
action.

• The Third section is the technical section. It introduces your
product/service, explains how it can help solve the recipient’s issue,
identifies the company’s plan for execution and provide technical
details of the deal.
• The Fourth section is the Managerial section. A section of your
proposal has to be dedicated to the topic of management approach
— how your organization will interface, report to whom and be held
accountable to whom in your client company.
• The Fifth section is the Financial section. It provides a breakdown
of the costs for every item in the proposal.
• The proposal ends with the writer’s name and designation written on
the left hand corner of the page.
Types of internal proposals
There are two types of internal proposals:
• Assigned Proposal: In assigned proposal, an employee writes
solution for a given problem. He does not have to establish the
problem.
• Unsolicited Proposal: In unsolicited proposal, the writer writes
the solution of a problem which he has discovered himself.
The goal of the proposal is to convince the person or group in
authority to allow the writer to implement his idea.
