Work and Energy Concepts Explained

Work is done when a force causes an object to move in the direction of the force. Work is measured in joules (J). There are different types of energy including kinetic energy from motion, potential energy stored due to position or properties, and chemical energy stored in fuels or batteries. Energy and work are calculated using equations involving force, distance, and other variables.

Work
object (in same direction as force)
Nm or J (Joule)
Unit

W = Fd Cos θ W=0 W=0 W = Fd Cos θ W = - Fd

- Is not a thing J (Joule)
Energy
- A measurement how much work can be done

Energy

Potential Thermal Radiated

Kinetic
- Due to object change - Heat, generated - Due to movement of light/sound
- Due to motion
position, shape, state due to cold down wave

Gravitational Potential
- Object held up in air. Work done when release. Due to gravity

Elastic Potential
- Object stretched. Work done when release. Due to elasticity

Chemical Potential
- Chemical energy stored in object. Energy released due to chemical reaction

Electrical Potential
- Flow of electron due to potential in electrical circuit

Nuclear Potential
- Energy released due to particles rearrange or atom split
Answer 1 : Answer 3b :
W=Fxd 35 MJ = 3500000 J
= 12 x 5
= 60 J

Answer 2 : Answer 3c :
W=Fxd 0.5 MJ = 500000 J
20 = 40 x d
d= 0.5 m

Answer 3a : Answer 3d :
10 kJ = 10000 J 0.2 kJ = 200 J
Answer 4 :
Energy in battery = 2 MJ
Energy in 1 Litre Petrol = 35 MJ
Number of battery = 35 / 2
= 17.5
Total 18 batteries
