SURPASSING THE COMPLEXITIES OF SIGN

LANGUAGE IN AN INCLUSIVE CLASS: A

PHENOMENOLOGICAL STUDY

An Outline Proposal Presented to the

Faculty of the Senior High School,
Carmen National High School

Jose Rizal
Andres Bonifacio
Antonio Luna
INTRODUCTION
• Teaching English subjects proves to be challenging in the Senior
High School Curriculum especially in an inclusive classroom
context. The teacher lacks or even absence of proper training in
handling students with special needs and doesn't know even adds
to the burden. Beside the problem on communications through
sign language and strategies to keep the interest of those who
have short attention span, teacher preparation, professional
development might also of interest and many more might come
along the way. Thus, it is not easy for teachers to handle the
class well, attract the student’s attention to the lesson, and let the
students be independent at the same time (Rizal, 2020).
• In Davao del Norte Division, the implementation of the inclusive
education program of the Department of Education is very
challenging. One of the challenges is the presence of only one
special education-trained teacher versus the heavy influx of SpED
enrollees.

• Despite the passion to teach, hesitance and discomfort hinder non-

SpeD-trained teachers in dealing with students with special needs in
English classes. Most of them are in a process of exploring
techniques and strategy how to become an effective teacher for
students with hearing impaired, deaf, mute and late development.

Research Gap
• Numerous studies have been conducted about the experiences of teachers
in teaching learners with special needs such as the study of (Sito, 2020 &
Fuente, 2021). Also, Ando (2019), who studied the experiences of sign
language teachers dealing with children with special needs in education.
However, most of the existing studies are focusing on mathematics and
science subject. There is an English but it focuses only on the
implementation of the sign language in the Junior level. No studies have
been established that deals with the experiences of teachers teaching
English subjects to learners with varied special needs in the Senior High
School. This prompted us as researcher to conduct this study in order to
reveal the experiences of senior high school English teachers in teaching
students with special needs in English subject.

TEACHERS’ PERSPECTIVE ON DUAW TULUNGHAAN: A QUALITATIVE
INQUIRY

Theoretical Lens
• This study is gleaned from the proposition of Roberston
(2016) who asserted the responsibility of the teachers who
need to be fluent in sign language in dealing the hearing
impaired learners in a mainstream education.
• Another theory is the Bruner's scaffolding theory of which
he considered learning as a shared or a joint process in a
responsive social context. In this instructional scaffolding,
children are capable of far more competent performance
when they have proper assistance from adults.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
• This study will choose six (6) participants from teachers in
a public Senior High School within the Division of Davao
del Norte. Notably, they are English teachers in Senior
High Schools teaching English subjects like. Oral
Communication, Reading and Writing and English for
Academic Professional Purposes. This will be conducted
from February to April for this school year 2022-2023.
Importance of the Study
• The findings of this study are significant to;
a.English teachers. Hence they shall have the opportunity to be given an
appropriate training focuses on teaching strategies and techniques on
how to teach English subjects to students with special needs.
b.It will also benefit the learners with special needs in the Senior High
School inclusive class since they are the end beneficiary for this study.
c.In addition, school administrators of learning resource center could
benefit from the study for they may use the results in the crafting policies
and guidelines for the development of the English curriculum in the senior
high school inclusive class.

Research Design

Qualitative phenomenological design

Creswell (2014) believed that qualitative research
is a good fit in addressing questions calls for an
exploration of the problem or issue. It can provide
insights to understand of underlying reasons,
opinions and motivation from the participants’
perspectives.
Research Participants
• In this study, there are six (6) participants in this
qualitative study who will be interviewed. All of the 6
participants are English teachers from senior high schools
from the Carmen National High School.
• Purposive sampling will be to determine the number of 6
participants, following Creswell's (2013) proposal that the
examined group should consist of 6 to 14 participants.
