Grocery Shopping Shopping Within A Budget

This document provides tips for saving money on grocery shopping by shopping strategically and within a budget. It recommends going grocery shopping mid-week and on Wednesdays when stores tend to have more sales. When buying produce, it suggests choosing items with longer shelf lives that will last until you're ready to eat them, and buying fruits and vegetables in season when they are cheaper. Grocery Shopping/Shopping Within a Budget

By Emily Walton
Grocery Shopping
Why can grocery shopping be hard? What do you think?
Time
Money
Overwhelming
SO many Choices
Expensive
What else?
Shopping While Saving Money!
Note: It does NOT always mean buying the cheapest thing you find.

Sometimes it is not good or the best for you even though you might save money.

The goal is to find a good price, and a good quality food. Meaning, you get to save money
but also get good nutrients from your food.
When is the best time to go?
Mid-Week! Wednesday!

Why?: It is less busy and there are more deals! That means more money saved!

Look for Sales!

Produce (Fruits and Vegetables)
Buy produce with a long shelf life. This means to buy the ones that will last the longest.
(The ones that are not all the way ripe, but will be ripe when you are ready to eat it.)

Buy them when they are in season. Buy them when they normally grow at a time in the
year.
Meats, Eggs, and Dairy
This is usually the most expensive thing to buy. Look for local sales.

Buy this in bulk, or a lot at once.

Try your recipes with a less expensive meat.

Try eggs instead of meat.

That’s the Basics! Now what?
Now take that plan into action! Go shopping!

But for now: Share what you learned with a partner, and then share it with the class.
Terms to know
Nutrients: Good vitamins, minerals, and fuel for your body.
Shelf Life: The time that food stays good and is okay to eat.
Produce: Fruits and Vegetables. Something that is grown.
Local: Near you, or by you. Something that is from your town.
