Water Properties Explained

The document discusses several key properties of water including: 1. Water molecules are polar, with one end positively charged and the other negatively charged, allowing them to bond together. 2. Properties like cohesion, surface tension, and adhesion arise from the polarity of water molecules and allow water to perform functions like capillary action and dissolving other polar substances. 3. Water has a high specific heat capacity, requiring a large amount of energy to change its temperature, which helps regulate temperatures on Earth.

WATER PROPERTY #1
Water molecules are
POLAR

One end of the water

molecule is positively
charged, and the other end
is negatively charged.
POLARITY
WATER PROPERTY #2
The cohesive property of
water molecules means
they are attracted to other
molecules of water.
WATER PROPERTY #3 The property of
the surface of a liquid that
allows it to resist an
external force, due to the
cohesive nature of its
molecules
WATER PROPERTY #3
-refers to the tendency of
water molecules to be
attracted or “stick” to
other substances.
HIGH SPECIFIC HEAT
Specific heat is the amount of heat Specific heat gives an
energy required to raise the indication of how
temperature of the body per unit of much energy will be
mass required to heat or
cool an object of a
given mass by a given
amount.

EVAPORATIVE
COOLING
- the process of removing
heat from the surface
due to evaporation of
water

- when water turns from

liquid to gas, it’s called
evaporation. The molecules vibrate and move quickly that they
escape into the atmosphere as molecules of water
vapor
Importance
of
Water
Properties
Why is it
important?
An effect of cohesion
and adhesion is
capillary action
which is the ability
of a liquid to rise in
a capillary tube.

They are used to transport water from roots to leaves

Surface tension
What’s the of water happens when the
SCIENCE behind? molecules of water stick together,
as molecules of water are attracted
to one another and fight against
gravity

When the water gets to the

top, it tends to ride up above the
glass rim and create a bubble shape
instead of instantly spilling over
Is water really a
universal
solvent?
Water has the ability to dissolve many substances but the term “universal solvent" is misleading.
Water is able to dissolve other polar molecules and ions, such as sugars and salts. However, nonpolar molecules
like oils lack partial positive or partial negative charges, so they are not attracted to water molecules. This is why
nonpolar substances like oil remain separate when added to water.
Mathematically speaking, what is the value of every
drop of water?
Studies calculated that
a person should drink 3 liters of
water a day. That is 60,000 drops
of water. If you save two drops
of water each day, you will save
730 drops of water a year and
61,320 droplets in your lifetime.
That actually can help someone
The accepted average volume of a drop of water is exactly live another day.
0.05 mL and it turns out that there are over 1.5x10^21
molecules in a drop of water.

1.5000000000000000000000 molecules of water!
