Here are the steps to complete the assignment: 1. List down the different species of plants and trees located in your surroundings at home. 2. Count how many individual plants or trees there are for each species. 3. Record the species name and number of individuals in a table. For example: Species Name Number of Individuals Mango tree 3 Banana plant 5 Guava tree 2 Grass 10 Submit your completed table to your teacher. This will help identify the biodiversity in your local area.

1. Species
- a set of animals or plants, members of which have similar
characteristics to each other, and which can breed with each other
2. Habitat
- is a place where an organism lives.
3. Extinction
– refers to the complete disappearance of a species from Earth.
4. Endangered
- a species is in danger of extinction throughout all or a significant
portion of its range.

FACTORS THAT CONTRIBUTES TO
SPECIES EXTINCTION
Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
1.Identify the different factors that contributes to species
extinction.
2.Perform an activity on identifying the different factors that
contributes to species extinction.
3.Appreciate the importance of knowing the different factors that
contributes to species extinction.
Activity Time
Group I - OVREHRAVESGNIT = __ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ __ ___
Group II- ESDURTCION FO BITATHA = __ __ __ ___ __ __

Group III- OLLUPIONT = __ __ ___ __ ___ __ ___
Group IV- UHNTGNI = __ __ __ __ __ __ __
Activity Time
Group I – OVREHRAVESGNIT
= OVERHARVESTING
Group II- ESDURTCION FO BITATHA
= DESTRUCTION OF HABITAT
Group III- OLLUPIONT
= POLLUTION
Group IV- UHNTGNI
= HUNTING
Factors that Contributes to Species Extinction
1. Hunting
- Hunting results in the
population depletion of
different species of plants and
animals, eventually leading to
extinction.
Why hunt?
A. to exploit the animal's body
for meat and useful animal
products
B. for recreation
2. Habitat Destruction

- When a habitat is destroyed, the

plants, animals and other
organisms that occupy the habitat
have reduced their carrying
capacity or ability to survive, to the
point that populations decline and
become extinct.
3. Pollution
- the introduction of harmful materials
into the environment.
- When the higher-level predators
have higher level toxins, they are likely
to suffer the diseases, birth defects,
genetic mutations and other
deleterious effects.
Examples:
a. Air Pollutants – toxic smoke, gas
b. Water Pollutants- toxic materials
that mixes with water
c. Land Pollutants- garbage,
pesticides, insecticides.
4. Overharvesting
- exploiting a natural resource
until its supply is so diminished
that its exploitation is no longer
sustainable.
Resources that can be
overharvested include:
A. plants
B. terrestrial animals
C. fish and marine invertebrates
D. renewable natural elements
such as forests.
Photo quiz: The words in the box are some of the causes of species extinction.
