Corrosive Sulfur in Power Transformers Analysis

The document discusses using frequency domain spectroscopy (FDS) to evaluate corrosive sulfur compounds in transformer oils that form from the decomposition of dibenzyl disulfide (DBDS) at high temperatures. These corrosive sulfur compounds degrade the oil and paper insulation over time and can cause catastrophic failures if not monitored. The objectives are to study the dielectric response under extreme corrosive conditions using FDS parameters like dissipation factor and permittivity and correlate FDS results with aging time periods. This will provide insight into the deteriorating health of transformers from these corrosive compounds.

Evaluation of corrosive sulfur in power

transformers based on FDS approach

INTRODUCTION DISCUSSION
Monitoring the progression of corrosive sulfur in
insulating oils gives valuable information on the degrading
health of the power transformers, thus preventing the
possibility of catastrophic failures.
Dibenzyl Disulfide (DBDS) is an anti-oxidant and anti-
wear additive present in transformer mineral oil to improve its
overall performance. In the presence of DBDS, mineral oil
becomes corrosive at higher temperatures due to the
decomposition of DBDS into reactive sulfur compounds.
These reactive sulfur compounds penetrate the oil and
paper insulation thus degrading it and form copper sulfide by
reacting with copper.
FDS (Frequency Domain Spectroscopy) in this study is
used to predict the degrading health due to these corrosive
sulfur compounds.

PROBLEM STATEMENT
DBDS decomposes on high temperatures into corrosive
sulfur compounds that deteriorate the overall performance
and health of power transformer.

The effect of this deteriorating behavior will be

evaluated by FDS to provide an insight to the potential failure.

OBJECTIVES
• To study the dielectric response of transformer oil and
paper insulation in extreme corrosive conditions.
• To evaluate the presence of corrosive sulfur using multiple
parameters including dissipation factor (tan, real and
imaginary permittivity.
• To study the correlation between ageing time-periods and
FDS results.
