Bushing Dimension Calculation Method

The document discusses the process of calculating bushing dimensions for an interference fit inside a pump housing. It involves: 1) Defining the tolerance class for the housing hole based on ISO 286 recommendations to ensure the actual housing ID falls within an acceptable range of the nominal diameter. 2) Considering thermal expansion between the housing and bushing materials at maximum operating temperatures to calculate a compensating thickness to be added to the bushing OD. 3) Ensuring a minimum interference fit between the housing and bushing even when both parts are fully expanded at maximum temperatures.

In fact, the actual housing ID is not always exactly equal to the

nominal diameter all along its length due to imperfection resulted by manufacture.
So, if the bushing OD was defined equal to the nominal diameter and fit into the
housing, there might be the unintentional clearance or interference between the
housing and the bushing.
To control the housing ID to be in permissible range, the tolerance
class principle in ISO 286 was applied to the housing hole.

According to all of previous considerations, the fit diagram of outer bushing and inner housing was established as shown above
and the minimum bushing OD and the minimum interference fit at ambient have been defined as follows:

Minimum bushing OD = [Maximum housing

[Nominal Dia.] ID] + [Minimum

; Minimum interference fit at ambient = [The compensated thickness] + [minimum interference at maximum temp] (2)
Minimum interference fit at ambient = 0.0172 + 0.126 = 0.1432 mm
Take (2) into (1) :

Minimum bushing OD = [Maximum housing ID] + [The compensated thickness] + [minimum interference at maximum temp]

Minimum bushing OD = 76.236 + 0.0172 + 0.126 = 76.379 = 76.38 mm

After the bushing is pressed into the housing, the ID will close-in an amount

When the system operate at operating temperature, the housing, the shaft and the bushing are
going to expand. And because of the interference fit that the bushing was mated with the
housing, caused the bushing was not allowed to expand bigger out of its center. So, it was going
to expand inward, caused the bushing and shaft could be out of the desired clearance.
To reach the desired clearance at operating temperature, the inner compensated
thickness shall be added to the bushing ID.

The inner compensated thickness = [Bushing expansion] + [shaft expansion] - [Housing expansion]
3) Thermal expansion consideration

The inner compensated thickness = [Bushing expansion] + [shaft expansion] - [Housing expansion]

Housing expansion = [Housing CTE]*[minimum housing ID]*[Diff temp]

According to all of previous considerations, the fit diagram of inner bushing and shaft was established as shown above and the
minimum bushing ID and the minimum clearance fit at ambient have been defined as follows:

Minimum bushing ID = [Nominal Dia.] + [Minimum clearance before ins.] (1)

; Minimum clearance fit before ins. = [eliminative thickness] + [Minimum desired running clearance] + [Inner compensated thickness] (2)

; Minimum clearance fit before ins. = 0.24 + 0.152 – 0.017 = 0.375

Take (2) into (1) :
Minimum bushing ID = [Nominal Dia.] + [eliminative thickness] + [Minimum desired running clearance] + [Inner compensated thickness]

Minimum bushing ID = 55.524 + 0.24 + 0.152 + 0.001 = 55.917 = 55.92 mm

According to all previous calculation,

The minimum clearance (before installation) = 0.375 mm

The minimum clearance (before installation) = 0.462 mm

The span of the clearance fit = 0.462 – 0.375 = 0.087 mm = 87 µm

Haft of the span of the fit = 87/2 = 43.5 µm

In the table 1, in the line of the nominal

size range above 50 up to 80 mm, the
value 43.5 µm is situated between 30 µm
and 46 µm. The sum of the table values is
76 µm which is smaller than 87 µm.

Hence, it follows:
One standard tolerance is 30 µm and the
standard tolerance grade is IT7.
The second standard tolerance is 46 µm
and the standard tolerance grade is IT8.
