EXAMINING A DECADE OF
WOMEN'S BREAST
CANCER IN ADDIS ABABA,
ETHIOPIA: TYPES,
TREATMENTS, AND
OUTCOMES
INTRODUCTION
Women's breasts are made of specialized tissue
that produces milk (glandular tissue) as well as
fatty tissue.
. Within each lobe are smaller structures, called
lobules, where milk is produced. The breast also
contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, and lymph
nodes.
INTRODUCTION
Breast cancer is a major public health
concern in Ethiopia. It is the leading
cause of cancer morbidity among adult
women, accounting for one-third of all
cancer cases among women and one in
five of all cancer cases. Annually, an
estimated 16,133 new breast cancer cases
and 9,061 breast cancer deaths occur in
Ethiopia.
TYPES OF BREAST C A N C E R
There are several types of breast cancer,
including ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS),
invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), and
invasive lobular carcinoma (ILC). IDC is the
most common type of breast cancer in
Ethiopia.
Treatment options depend on the type
and stage of breast cancer.
BREAST CANCER IN C ID E N C E
Breast cancer incidence has been
increasing in Ethiopia over the past
decade. In Addis Ababa, the incidence
rate is higher than the national average.
Risk factors for breast cancer include age,
family history, and lifestyle factors such
as diet and physical activity.
The study conducted by the Global
Cancer Observatory recent report
indicated in 2020 Ethiopian female
breast cancer five years prevalence
was 48.52 per 100,000
Statements of the problem
Despite notable progress in healthcare
infrastructure and services, several
factors contribute to the high
incidence, late-stage diagnosis, and
limited access to quality treatment
options for breast cancer patients
within the Ethiopian context
Statements of the problem
Such kinds of gaps should be clearly
investigated and exposed to concerning
body to calm down the upgoing
incidence of the condition in Ethiopia.
Breast cancer recurrence
Understanding these potential causes
of breast cancer treatment recurrence
is crucial for developing personalized
treatment plans and ongoing
surveillance strategies to minimize the
risk and manage recurrent cases
effectively
Statements of the
problem
Implementing targeted interventions,
identifying the most frequent type of
breast cancer, raising awareness, improving
healthcare infrastructure, and fostering a
culture of early detection and prevention
are imperative steps towards mitigating the
impact of breast cancer in Ethiopia.
Objectives
The objective of the study will be to
(a) quantify both women’s awareness and prescreened women for breast cancer,
(b) determine the predominate type of breast cancer in the city,
(c) identify which kinds of treatments were highly used in those study populations,
(d) analyze the stage of breast cancer when the study population were attended medical center,
and
(e) determine the effectiveness of treatments based on recurrence rate.
Methodology
Study Place and Setting
This study will conduct at government-
owned, oncology care center in Addis Ababa
city.
Study Design
Retrospective hospital-based patient chart
record analysis of patients diagnosed with
breast cancer between January 2014 and
January 2024
Methodology
Data and Data Collection
The oncology unit registration book was used to identify patients with diagnosis of breast cancer
during the study period.
Relevant data were extracted from the charts using data collection tool designed to collect
uniform data from the patients’ charts for this study.
The collected data included sociodemographic, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and type of
cancer, stage, treatment, and outcomes.
Study Out come
study will indicate treatment option
should be personalized rather than
general treatment.
Awareness plays a significant role to
detect new case in the early stage as
possible and boosting for cure and reduce
mortality from the disease
Based on the outcome of the study
population the result will indicate for
additional study on the mechanism of
recurrence in breast cancer for Ethiopian
women.
CONCLUSION
Breast cancer is a major public health concern in Ethiopia. The past
decade has seen an increase in breast cancer incidence in Addis
Ababa.
Early detection and multidisciplinary care are essential for improving
breast cancer outcomes. There is a need for increased awareness,
education, and resources for breast cancer prevention, screening,
and treatment in Ethiopia.
