Defensive preparations
Training Department 10 March 2024
General knowledge
Engaging in battle from a fixed position is carried out to either defeat
the opponent or to support flanking groups.
Engaging in battle from a position can also be done to defend a
location. In attacks where the group has taken terrain, immediate preparations are made to defend the captured territory from the position
A position is chosen, if possible, where the opponent cannot advance
with a wide formation. Exploit natural obstacles and cover to make it difficult for the opponent to attack into the position. From the position, the group should be able to concentrate firepower on a specific area. Eight basic preparations
x Frontal protection - avoiding direct support for the opponent
x Flanking firing direction - our fire should hit the opponent's vulnerable side x Defensible firing distances - our fire must hit and have an effect x Clear shooting fields - it is the opponent who should receive our fire, not the terrain in front of us x Flee from the forest edge (facade) - let the forest edge protect us from detection and opponent's artillery x Air cover - avoiding opponent's air attacks, helicopters, and UAVs. x field work facilitation - we must be able to use mines and also improve our protection (dig ourselves in) and x Free regrouping routes - withdrawal backward should be able to happen safely and quickly.
These preparations should always be considered
depending on the amount of time available. Further preparations
Then proceed with the following:
x appoint an observer and assign a surveillance area, x order, if possible, the rest of the group into cover (protective position), x measure distances, x supplement and improve initial actions, and x check the ammunition and redistribute as needed
If the situation allows, the group does the following:
x clear shooting fields to ensure the group's weapons have a clear line of fire, x reconnaissance of alternate firing positions for supporting weapons, rounds, or combat pairs, x prepare for mining. Mining occurs on orders, x scout withdrawal routes, x scout alternate battle positions, and x prepare for the battle. Further preparations
