Base Plane in Architecture

There are four types of horizontal planes: base plane, elevated base plane, depressed base plane, and overhead plane. A base plane is a horizontal plane laying flat on the ground that defines a simple field of space through surface perception contrasts. An elevated base plane is raised above the ground, creating vertical surfaces along its edges that reinforce its visual separation from the surrounding ground. A depressed base plane is lowered into the ground, utilizing its vertical surfaces to define an isolated spatial zone distinctly different from its larger context.

Depressed Base Plane
A horizontal plane depressed into the ground plane utilizes the vertical surfaces
of the lowered area to define a volume of space.

 Vertical elements formed by the depression creates visible
boundaries
