THE PHILIPPINE
ELECTRICAL CODE

WHAT IS THE PHILIPPINE ELECTRICAL CODE

REPUBLIC ACT NO. 7920

is an act providing for more responsive and

comprehensive regulation for the practice,
licensing and registration of electrical
engineer and electricians.
DID YOU KNOW?
lThe Philippine Electrical Code (PEC) is a set of standards
and regulations that govern the safe and proper installation,
operation, and maintenance of electrical systems in the
Philippines. It provides guidelines for electrical design,
wiring, equipment selection, grounding, protection, and
other related aspects to ensure electrical safety and
efficiency.
DID YOU KNOW?
The PEC is primarily based on the National Electrical Code
(NEC) of the United States but incorporates modifications
and adaptations to suit the local conditions, practices, and
regulations in the Philippines. It is published and updated
by the Institute of Integrated Electrical Engineers of the
Philippines (IIEE) in collaboration with the Board of
Electrical Engineering (BEE) and the Philippine
Association of Certified Public Accountants (PACPA).
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE
CODE? PRACTICAL SAFEGUARDING OF PERSONS AND
PROPERTY FROM HAZARDS ARISING FROM THE USE OF
ELECTRICITY
The primary purpose of the Philippine Electrical Code
is to minimize the risk of electricity as a source of
electric shock and as a potential ignition source of
fires and explosions; and to minimize the propagation
of fire and explosions due to electrical installations.
HISTORICAL
BACKGROUND
FORMERLY RA # 184

The first documented case of a Code as a requirement of rules

was published on 16th Nov. 1881 entitled “The Dangers of
Electric Lighting”. The first NEC was developed in 1897,
eighteen after the invention of incandescent light bulb by
Thomas A. Edison.
BRIEF OVERVIEW
PEC I – ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION INSIDE BUILDINGS
PEC II – Electrical Installation outside buildings
PEC consists of rules which are intended to make use of electricity safe
for person and property.
MANDATORY RULES

characterized by the use of the word “SHALL’’.

ADVISORY RULES

characterized by the use of the word “SHOULD” or are stated as

recommendations of that which is advised but not required.
ELECTRIC CURRENT
CURRENT ELECTRICITY IS A CONTINUOUS FLOW OF ELECTRIC CHARGE

Current is defined as the quantity of charge that flows past a given point per unit of time.
The standard unit of measurement for current is the ampere (A).

DIRECT CURRENT (DC)

A type of electric current where the charges flow in one direction only. Batteries are
an example of a direct current source.

ALTERNATING CURRENT
(AC)
A type of electric current that flows in one direction, then the reverse direction, repeatedly.
The electric current supplied by power companies to homes is an example of AC.

standards for the safe use of electricity for
light, heat, power, communications, signaling
and for other purposes.
• Adequacy – Strict compliance with the
provisions of this Code will ensure safety in
electrical installation and construction, but
not necessarily efficient, convenient, or
adequate for good service or future
expansion of electrical use.
