ADHESIVE
METHODS OF MANUFACTURE OF SHOES
A) “Stitched – on sole” process
Labour intensive
Stress concentration
Weakening of substrate
Ingress of moisture
B) “Stuck – on” Process (Adhesive Bonding)
Ease of assembly
Uniform stress distribution
Better sealing action
C) Direct vulcanization or direct injection process
( DVP , DIP )
less labour than even ‘ stuck – on’ process
All advantages of ‘ stuck – on ‘ process
However highly capital intensive.
DISADVANTAGES OF NR ADHESIVES
A Low initial bond strength.
B Low final bond strength.
C Greater susceptibility to oxidative degradation.

ADHESIVE FOR PVC SOLES
For bonding soles to leather or PVC rubber upper we would
recommend an adhesive based on Polyesterpolyurethane. The
receipe is as follows.
Polyesterpolyurethane - 18 parts
Methylethylkelone - 82 parts
Immediately before using, add 3 – 5 parts of Triisocyanate in case of
leather uppers. Triisocyanate should be used in case of footwear is
white or light coloured.
In case the upper is also PVC then 5 parts by weight of
Triisocyanate is added to 100 parts by weight of adhesive solution
just before using.
After application of adhesive to the substrate the dried surface to be
heat activated under infra red lamps for 2 – 3 so that the adhesive
layer should reach a temperature of 80 c. The surface then joined
together and pressed firmly for 3’– 4’.
The potlife of adhesive after addition of Triisocyanate is very
short. Hence, it is advisable to add Triisocyanate to small
quantities of adhesives which should be used up within half
to one hour.
The Polyesterpolyurethane solution can also be used as one
component system. However the thermal stability of the
bonds will be poor.
