Unit 1.

4: Respiration

1.4 Respiration
SWBAT: Know that aerobic respiration occurs in the mitochondria
of plant and animal cells and gives a controlled release of energy.
Know and use the summary word equation for aerobic respiration.
Learning Objectives:
1) Define aerobic respiration. State where it takes place.
2) Write the word and the symbol equation of aerobic respiration and link to
photosynthesis equation.
3) Explain that respiration releases heat (photosynthesis absorbs energy).
4) Differentiate between breathing and respiration.
Unit 1.4: Respiration

Keywords:
Respiration- is a chemical reaction that releases useful energy from glucose.
Aerobic- involving oxygen/ with oxygen

Mitochondria- a tiny structure in the cell where respiration takes place

Glucose- a kind of sugar, used as an energy source by living cells

Unit 1.4: Respiration
We use energy to stay alive.
Our bodies need energy for many different reasons.

All of our energy comes from the food that we eat. Carbohydrates are especially good
for giving us energy.

Unit 1.4: Respiration
Mitochondria From Gr.6

• The main job of mitochondria is to perform cellular

respiration. This means it takes in nutrients from the cell,
breaks it down, and turns it into energy.
• Chemical energy produced by the mitochondria is stored
in a small molecule called adenosine triphosphate (ATP).

Unit 1.4: Respiration
Key Points Present New Information

• Respiration is a chemical reaction that happens inside cells

• It releases energy
• Aerobic respiration involves oxygen

• Glucose + Oxygen 
Carbon Dioxide + Water (+ Energy)
• C6H12O6 + O2  CO2 + H2O

• Respiration happens in mitochondria

• The energy released could be used to make muscles contract
• During exercise the heart rate and breathing rate will increase

Unit 1.4: Respiration
Questions: Pair Session
1 Neurones contain more mitochondria than cheek cells. Suggest
why.

2 Look at the word equation for aerobic respiration.

a What are the reactants in this reaction?
b What are the products in this reaction?

3 Use the equation for aerobic respiration to explain why the air
that you breathe out contains more carbon dioxide than the air that you
breathe in.
Unit 1.4: Respiration
Answers:
1 Because we use energy to send electrical impulses along
neurons.

2 Look at the word equation for aerobic respiration.

a Glucose and Oxygen
b Carbon dioxide and Water and energy

3 Because carbon dioxide is the product of aerobic

respiration
