Quadratic Function
Lesson 1
Introduction to Quadratic
Function
Objectives
At the end of the lesson, students must be able to:
Correctly identify a quadratic function;
Correctly identify the values of a, b, and c in
a given quadratic function;
Correctly describe the opening and the
vertex of a parabola; and
Properly model real-life situations using
quadratic functions

Quadratic Function

Is a second-degree polynomial function in the

form where

Parabola

It is the graph of Quadratic Function (U –

Shape Curve).
The opening of the parabola can be
determined by simply looking at the coefficient .
𝑎>0 , 𝑡h𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑠 𝑂𝑝𝑒𝑛𝑈𝑝𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 .

𝑎<0 , 𝑡h𝑒 𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑏𝑜𝑙𝑎𝑖𝑠 𝑂𝑝𝑒𝑛𝐷𝑜𝑤𝑛𝑤𝑎𝑟𝑑 .

The graph of a quadratic function has the following
 Vertex
Minimum or maximum point of the parabola.
 Axis of symmetry
Line that divides the parabola into two symmetrical
parts
 Intercepts
Point(s) of intersection of the parabola and the axes
Some properties of the graph of a
quadratic function are described below.
 The vertex is the minimum point if the
parabola opens upward. Otherwise, it is the
maximum point.
 The axis of symmetry always passes
through the vertex.
 A parabola can have at most two x-
intercepts. It always has a y-intercept.
