6
Copyright Complications
The digital landscape has created
many complications for copyright
protection, as copying and spreading
copyright-protected material is easier
than ever. Contemporary culture may
also blur the lines between copying,
simply adapting, or taking inspiration
from creative content.

7
Copyright Complications
It is more important than ever to
avoid becoming part of the problem
by playing our role as citizens in
protecting intellectual property.
Responsibly using media and
information and knowing what we
can about fair use and what that
allows and doesn’t allow will be a big
help.

8
Philippine Protections
To complement that, the Philippine
government has taken steps to pass
legislation and establish agencies that
will help prevent the unauthorized use
and treatment of copyrighted
material.

9
Philippine Protections
The Anti-Camcording Act of 2010
seeks to address the pressing problem
of piracy in Philippine cinemas by
criminalizing the video recording of
films in theaters. The distribution and
sale of these are also prohibited.

10
Philippine Protections
Even intellectual property that is spread
through legitimate channels needs to be
scrutinized so that it serves the best
interests of the country. The Media and
Television Review and Classification
Board (MTRCB) was established to
regulate materials that may be indecent,
inappropriate, or threatening to national
security.

11
Philippine Protections
The Intellectual Property Office of the
Philippines (IPOPHL) was established to
create a body that would manage
intellectual property protections, such as
granting copyright protection for original
creations.

Their work helps protect inventors,

entrepreneurs, artists, and more.

12
Philippine Protections
One way pirated or unauthorized
copies of films and even music can
spread is through selling optical
media, such as compact discs or
digital video discs. The Optical
Media Board (OMB) was
established to root out and eliminate
the pirating and sale of these
materials.

13
Philippine Protections
The IPOPHL also grants inventors a
patent, an exclusive license for the
originator of a “technical solution [. . .] in
any field of human activity which is new,
inventive, and industrially applicable.”
The patent “allows the inventor to exclude
others from making, using, or selling the
product of his invention” during the
patent’s life span.
