Computer Virus

This document defines and compares different types of malware like viruses, worms, and Trojan horses. It explains that viruses are programs that infect systems without permission and can damage files or disrupt functionality. Worms are self-replicating programs that spread via networks and consume storage space. Trojan horses disguise themselves as legitimate programs but give unauthorized access to systems. The document outlines various virus types like boot sector, macro, email, stealth and polymorphic viruses. It also describes how viruses are created and how they spread between computers on a network.

What is Virus ?
A virus is a program or piece of code that is loaded onto your computer without your knowledge and runs against your wishes.

Virus can be very destructive;

it can affect your system By destroying important information in comp. By making changes in directories. By formatting floppy or hard disk. BY altering the size of file and structure. By stopping the execution of files. By altering the function of keyboard. By hindering the booting of the computer.

WHY IT IS CALLED VIRUS ?

Bcoz it has some traits like biological virus. As it affect people and spreading person to person. A computer virus affects one system to others.

How Does a Computer Get a Virus?

On downloading files from the Internet. On opening an e-mail attachment. On copying programs or files from any other infected computer. Through pirated s/ws.

General Types of viruses

Boot sector virus E-mail virus Stealth virus Polymorphic virus Macro viruses

BOOT SECTOR VIRUS

Replaces and implants itself in the boot sector. This kind of virus can prevent you from being able to boot your system.

MACRO VIRUS
Written using a simplified macro programming lang. These viruses affect Microsoft office applications. A document infected with macro virus generally modifies pre-existing, commonly used command to trigger its payload upon execution of that command.

E-MAIL VIRUS

An E-mail virus moves around in e-mail

message and usually replicates itself by automatically mailing itself to dozens of people in the victims email address book.

SEALTH VIRUS

.
.

Hides its presence by making an infected file not appear infected

POLYMORPHIC VIRUS
Changes code whenever it passes to another system.

Symptoms of a computer virus

The computer runs slower than usual. The computer crashes, and then it restarts every few minutes. Applications on the computer do not work correctly. Disks or disk drives are inaccessible. You see unusual error messages. An antivirus program cannot be installed on the computer, or the antivirus program will not run. New icons appear on the desktop that you did not put.

Worms
These viruses spread via computer networks. It is self replicating computer program. Worm eat up the storage space and slows down the comp. but worms dont alter or delete files.

ORIGIN OF VIRUS
People create virus. A person has to be write the code, test it to make sure it spreads properly and then release the virus. A person also designs the viruss attack phase, weather it is a silly message or destruction of hard disk. In most cases people create virus just for thrill and fun.

How a virus spread via network ?

Trojan Horse
A Trojan virus is one that opens your computer up to malicious users allowing them to read your files.

Difference Between a Virus, Worm and Trojan Horse

Virus cannot replicate themselves but worm and trojan can do that. A virus cannot be spread without a human action such as running an infected file or program but worm and trojan have the capabilities to spread themselves automatically from computer to computer through network connetion. A virus do not consume system memory but worm consumes too much system memory and network bandwidth because of their copying nature. Trojans are used by malicious users to access your computer information but viruses and worms cant do so, they simply infect your computer.
