Soil Cement

Soil cement is a compacted mixture of soil, aggregate, Portland cement and water that is used as a low-cost pavement base material. It provides good compressive and shear strength but has low tensile strength and can crack. Soil cement is constructed by determining the optimal cement content, compaction and water requirements for the soil through testing and then mixing and compacting the soil cement in place or at a central plant. It has various applications such as in earth embankments and pavements due to advantages like reduced costs and improved strength.

 Introduction

 Conclusion
INTRODUCTI
ON
 Soil cement is compacted mixture of soil/aggregate ,Portland
cement ,water.
 It is also known as cement stabilization of soil or cement treated
aggregate & it is widely used as low cost pavement base.
 It has good compressive and shear strength ,but is brittle & has low
tensile strength.so it is prone to performing cracks
WHY USE SOIL
CEMENT?
 Failing granular-base pavements, with or without their old
bituminous mats , can be salvaged ,strengthened & reclaimed as
soil-cement pavements.
 This is an efficient ,economical way of rebuilding pavements .
Since approximately 90 % of the material used is already in
place ,handling & hauling costs are cut to a minimum .
RAW
MATERIALS

 Soil /aggregate
 Portland cement
 Water
HOW IS SOIL CEMENT
BUILT ?
 Before construction begins simple laboratory test establish the
cement content , compaction & water requirement of the soil
material to be used.
 During construction tests are made to see that the requirements are
being met . Testing ensures that the mixture will have strength and
long-term durability . No guesswork is involved .
 Soil-cement can be mixed in place or in a central mixing plant .
Central mixing plants can be used where borrow material is
involved.
TYPES OF SOIL-
CEMENT
 Cement-modified soil (CMS)
 Soil-cement base (SCB)
 Cemented-treated base (CTB)
 Acrylic copolymer (Rhino snot)
PERFORMANCE OF SOIL
CEMENT

 Its slab like characteristics and beam strength are unmatched by

granular bases.
 Hard, rigid soil-cement resists cyclic cold , rain & spring- thaw
damage.
 Cement stabilizes the soil in two ways . First, it reduces the soil
plasticity, especially for the soil in which there is high amount of
clay particles .And the second is cementation for fine grained silty
and clayey soil .
PROPERTIES OF SOIL

 Load vs Deformation
APPLICATIONS
 Earth embankment
 Pavements
 Soil-cement bricks
ADVANTAGES
 Reduce cost
 Eliminate waste
 Improve strength
 Decrease volume change characteristics
 Improve performance
DISADVANTAGES
 Can not operate if moisture of soil above 10% .
 Cracks may form in soil cement .
 It requires extra labour .
 It is not suitable for some type of soil .
 The quantity of water must be sufficient for hydration of
cement and making the mixture workable.
CONCLUSION
 As a civil engineer our aim is economy without losing
strength . Hence soil-cement is best choice for low traffic
pavements . Soil-cement bricks are eco-friendly with nature .
