Empower® Software Essentials: Step-by-Step
Tutorial for Processing Method Creation and
Data Analysis

©2007 Waters Corporation

Choose the chromatogram
with the lowest concentration
and then click on Review.
Click on the Processing
Method Wizard icon.
Choose:
- Processing type "LC"
The algorithm "traditional"
Click on "ok"
Select the base of one of the
peaks by clicking with the mouse
and then dragging it to the desired
part of the peak, then click on
"Next."
With the mouse, select and then drag it
into a part of the chromatogram where
there are no peaks (that is, at the baseline
level), then click on 'next'
Select the part of the chromatogram
that you want to process, either by:
1- Entering the start and end time of
the chromatogram.
2- Zoom in on the part of
the chromatogram using
the mouse.
1

2 3 To remove
unwanted peaks

1- Check "Minimum Area"

2- Enter a number corresponding to a
minimum surface
3- Click on test
Select the type of
calibration curve.
Generally, it is
either:

1- Linear when
working with
multiple
concentrations of
standards.

2- Response factor
when working with
a single
concentration of
standard.
Write the name of each peak
Then click on "Next"
Enter a name example:
Training
To calculate the concentration of
unknowns, you need to input the
concentrations of the three standards
so that the software can plot the
calibration curve and then extrapolate
the concentration of each unknown
based on its area.
Select the standards and the
unknowns, then click on the "Alter
Sample" icon.
In the column labeled
"SampleWeight," you enter the
weights of the samples taken.
In the column labeled
"Dilution," you enter your
dilution factor.

For the Standards, if you

have a constant called
'Purity,' you can directly
introduce it at the level of
the Standards'
SimpleWeight.
"Click on Amount"
"Click on Edit."
Click on "Copy Component From Process
Method."
Select the previously created
Process Method and click on
Open
Enter the number 1 for all peaks
In the Units column, always precede your unit with
the symbol <

Then click on
OK.
Click on "save" and then "quit."
To perform the process for
unknowns and determine their
concentration:
1. First, select the Standards in
ascending order of concentration
(from the lowest to the highest).
2. Then, choose the unknown
samples.
3. Finally, click on the "Process"
icon.
1
2
-1- Click on "Use Specified
3
Processing Method."
-2- Select the processing
method that you have
created.
-3- Click on "Clear
Calibration."
-4- Click on "ok."

1- Click on the "Results" tab.

2- Click on "Update" to
refresh the results.
To view the
concentration of
unknown peaks:
1- Double-click on the
chromatogram of your
choice
2- Alternatively, select
the chromatogram and
click on "Review"
Here are the
concentrations of
each peak.
By clicking on the
"Calibration
Curve" icon:

1- You obtain the
calibration curve
generated by the
three standards.

2- The equation of
the straight line.
3- As well as the R²
value.
Creation of a report:
Select a chromatogram and
click on "Preview/Publisher."
Creating a report:
1. Click on "Use the
following Report
Method."

2. Select one of the

reports from the list.

3. Click on "OK."
In this example, we
will use the "Default
Individual Report."

1 • 1- To print the
report, click on
the "Print"
icon.
• 2- To edit the
report and add
other
parameters,
click on "Quit."
We get this
window.
To add one or more
new tables, simply
double-click on one of
the tables from the
list located to the
right of this window.
You can also modify the
tables to remove or add a
parameter or a criterion:

Right-click on the table and

then click on "Table
Properties."
"Depending on the
criteria to add, click on
the symbol '+'."
Select the parameters of
your choice, then click to
add to the table.
Finally, click OK.
We obtain the new
table with the new
parameters added.
Click on 'Print Preview
To view the rest
