Practice Item:

It describes how far apart scores are spread

in a distribution.
Item 1:

What is the formula for solving for the

range of a set of data?
Item 2:

A business tracked the number of customer

calls received over five days – 57, 63, 48,
49, and 59. What is the highest and lowest
number of call received by the business?
Item 3:

What is the range of customer calls

received daily – 57, 63, 48, 49, and 59?
Item 4:

What is the formula for solving for the

mean absolute deviation of ungrouped
data?
Item 5:

Given the set of data – 57, 63, 48, 49, and

59. What is the mean?
Item 6:

What is the sum of the absolute distances

of the mean and the number of customer
calls received by a business in five days –
57, 63, 48, 49, and 59?
Item 7:

What is the mean absolute deviation of the

given set of data - – 57, 63, 48, 49, and 59?
MEAN ABSOLUTE
DEVIATION OF
GROUPED DATA
MEASURE OF DISPERSION
GRADE 9
Lesson • recall the mean absolute deviation of
Objectives: ungrouped data;
• calculate the mean absolute deviation of
grouped data;
• solve word problems involving the
mean absolute deviation of grouped data;
• interpret the mean absolute deviation of
grouped data.
MEAN ABSOLUTE DEVIATION
It is the average absolute distance between
the set of data and their mean.
𝐌𝐀𝐃 = ∑ ¿ 𝐗 − 𝐱 ∨¿
𝐍 ¿
𝐌𝐀𝐃 = ∑ 𝐟 ∨ 𝐗𝐦 − 𝐱 ∨¿
𝐍 ¿

where:
f = frequency of each data value
= class mark
= mean of the data
N = total frequency
Steps in solving for MAD:
1. Calculate for the mean of the given data set.
2. Find the absolute deviation of the mean from each class
mark.
3. Multiply each absolute deviation by the corresponding
class frequency.
4. Divide the sum of the products of the absolute deviation to
the total number of observations to get the mean absolute
deviation.
Example 1:

Compute for the mean absolute deviation of the given set of data.
f x fx
29 – 33 5 31 155
34 – 38 5 36 180
39 – 43 4 41 164
44 – 48 4 46 184
49 – 53 2 51 102
remember
The larger the MAD, the
greater variability there is in
the data (the data is more
spread out).
MAD is fun
Assignment:
The length of 40 insects of a certain species were measures correct to the nearest
millimeters. Find the mean absolute deviation.

lengths (mm) f

30 – 34 4
35 – 39 7
40 – 44 10
45 – 49 8
50 – 54 6
