Topic 3.4: Sustainable developments in travel & transport
Main themes:
• Defining sustainability
• Sustainability in transport
• Sustainable solutions:
o Reduced/low emissions
o Carbon replacement schemes
o Alternative energy sources, e.g. electricity, solar
power
o Sustainable travel choices, e.g. tourist choice of
method of transport, domestic rather than
international

What is the link between sustainability & transport?
• Transport is often unsustainable, as
it releases large quantities of
carbon emissions into the
atmosphere (which leads to global
warming).
• Sustainable transport has become
important as more tourists are
interested in protecting the climate
and minimising their carbon
emissions.

Topic 3.4: Sustainable developments in travel & transport
Solution 1: Reduced emissions
• Sustainable transportation methods,
such as electric vehicles, vehicle
sharing & public transit,
significantly reduce the amount of
carbon dioxide and other greenhouse
gases released into the atmosphere.
• Fewer vehicles mean reduced
emissions, less traffic congestion,
and decreased demand for parking
spaces, leading to more green spaces
in urban areas.

Topic 3.4: Sustainable developments in travel & transport
Solution 2: Sustainable travel choices
Tourists can be more sustainable by
making choices which are less harmful to
the environment e.g. bikes, walking short
distances, using trams/metro, choosing
domestic tourism instead of international
tourism.

Topic 3.4: Sustainable developments in travel & transport
Solution 3: Alternative energy sources
• Reducing the amount of fossil fuels used to reduce
carbon emissions.
Examples:
Electric and Hybrid Vehicles:
• powered by renewable energy sources, offer a
sustainable alternative to fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
• environmental benefits: Beyond zero or reduced
emissions, decreased air pollutants, benefiting urban
air quality.

Topic 3.4: Sustainable developments in travel & transport
Solution 4: Carbon replacement schemes
• A carbon replacement scheme is where
a company will replace the carbon
emitted by their vehicles by planting
trees to absorb the carbon released.
• This offsets the carbon emissions,
therefore making the company more
sustainable.
