of Cancer and the Arctic circle are called the
temperate z o n e s . Te m p e r a t e climates are
generally defined as environments with moderate
rainfall spread across the year or portion of the
year with sporadic drought, mild to warm
summers and cool to cold winters. The temperate
zones are found between latitudes 25° and 70°
north and south of the equator.

Seasons
Te m p e r a t e climates usually
experience four seasons -
o Summer
o Fall
o Wi n t e r
o Spring
This is because in this region
the sun is never overhead.
precipit
ation
The amount of precipitation varies. Besides latitude,
other factors such as distance from the sea, ocean
currents and prevailing winds also exert a strong
influence on the precipitation of these climates. For
instance, places with inland locations experience less
precipitation than places with coastal locations.

Rain often comes in the form of storms that develop in
the North Atlantic and blow across Britain from west to

much more rain than the lowlands and this has a large
effect on what can be grown.
Temper
ature
Te m p e r a t e climates of the Earth are
characterized by relatively moderate mean
annual temperatures, with average monthly
temperatures above 10°C in their warmest
months and above −3°C in their colder
months. Just like precipitation, ocean
currents, distance from the sea, prevailing
winds etc. Also has an influence in the
temperature of these climates. There are
large differences in temperature between
inland and coastal locations.

Warm
temperate
The warm temperate climates are found in areas
where the average temperature of the warmest
month exceeds 1ooC and the coldest month
between 180C and above –30c.
Between 250 and 400 North and south of the
equator lies the warm temperate region. People
living in mediterranean countries, in central
and eastern Asia, in north America, in south
America and in southern Australia experience
this climate.
Cool
temperate
The cool temperate climate is found in areas
from latitude 400 to almost 700 north of the

northern hemisphere where large land masses
are located.
The northern part of north America, in northern
USA and Canada, in northwest Europe, and in
the eastern coast of Asia in northern Japan and
China experience this climate.
