Basic Symbols: Introduction to
Flowcharts
At the end of the lesson students are expected to:

› understand and identify the purpose and components of


flowcharts.

› create a simple flowchart to represent a given process.

› analyze and interpret flowcharts to understand a process


or algorithm.

Major types of flowcharts
› Process Flow Diagram - illustrates the general flow of
a process and the relationships between the major
components.

› Data Flow Diagram - visualizes how data is processed


in an information system from input to output.

› Workflow Diagram - illustrate the steps involved to


complete a task or execute a process in an efficient
way.
Major types of flowcharts
› Swimlane Flowcharts - visualizes multiple flows of
information or categories to help clarify roles and
responsibilities.

› Yes/ No Flowcharts - also known as dichotomous


keys, yes/no flowcharts make it easy to visualize
different paths based on yes/no decisions.
Elements of a flowcharts:
› Terminator - represented by a small rectangle with curved
corners. Appears at the start and at the end of a flowchart.

› Process - represented by a rectangle. It refers to an action


in a business process. It must be described clearly and
concisely
Elements of a flowcharts:
› Decision - represented by a diamond. A process that can
answer a decision of “yes” or “no” requires a decision box.

› Connecctor - represented by a small circle or a connector


box and is labeled using letters.
Elements of a flowcharts:
› Arrow lines - drawn in one direction, preferably from top to
bottom, keep a flowchart clear.

› Input/output - represented by a parallelogram, it denotes


either the input or output of information in your flowchar

Elements of a flowcharts:
› Predefine process/ Sub-process - represented as a double
lined rectangle and indicates a marker for another process
step or series of process flow steps that are formally
defined elsewhere.
Direction: Using the basic symbols used
for flowchart, choose from the given
suggestion and make a simple
flowchart.

the following problem with the use of flowcharts.
