Visible Lights

The document discusses visible light, including its spectrum, colors, discoverers, and uses. Visible light lies between ultraviolet and infrared radiation and is the only part of the electromagnetic spectrum visible to humans. It has many important uses but overexposure can cause eye problems and damage materials.

VISIBLE LIGHT
WHAT IS VISIBLE LIGHT?

The visible light spectrum is the segment of the

electromagnetic spectrum that the human eye
can view. More simply, this range of wavelengths
is called visible light. Typically, the human eye
can detect wavelengths from 380 to 700
nanometers
Light or “visible light” refers to
the visible region of the
electromagnetic spectrum –
that is, the range of
wavelengths that trigger
brightness and colour
perception in humans. It lies
between UV and infrared
radiation.
The visible light shares the thinnest slice
in the electromagnetic spectrum. It lies in
between the infrared and the ultraviolet
rays. It is the only EM wave perceived by
the human eye. If not because of the
visible light, we will not be able to see the
beauty of our surrounding much less
appreciate it.
WHAT ARE THE COLORS OF THE
VISIBLE LIGHT SPECTRUM?

Have you ever heard the term “Roy G. Biv.”

to describe the colors of the rainbow? Red,
Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and
Violet are the colors visible to us. This is
referred to as visible spectrum light or light
color spectrum.
Visible light comes in all
the colors of the rainbow.
Each color has its own
special frequency and
wavelength. When all the
colors are together, they
make the normal “white”
light that we see.
Violet – shortest wavelength, around
400-420 nanometers with highest
frequency. They carry the most
energy.

Indigo – 420 – 440 nm

Blue – 440 – 490 nm
Green – 490 – 570 nm
Yellow – 570 – 585 nm
Orange – 585 – 620 nm
Red – longest wavelength, at around
6
Have a 620-750 nm

What are the uses of
Visible Light?
1. We use it to see

This is the main and most important use of

visible light in the modern world. There are
lights like an electric bulb, fireworks and
other sources of light rays, with their shiny
rays, we can see things and make a dark room
visible.
2. To make lasers for use in a surgery room

Laser light is a collection of light or

concrete of light that is then pronounced as
a beam. The laser lights are used in surgery
rooms as the rays make it clear for a
surgeon to see and carry out his activities.
There is also a surgery called the laser
surgery and that is used to cut tissues.
3. For our television

The waves of light that make

the television that we use to
have fun and watch videos is
made up of visible light.
Without visible light, there is
no way we would be able to
focus our eyes on the TV and
watch movies and other
entertainment.
4. For our cell phones

Of course, the ray of light in our

phones is made up of visible light,
or you can as well say, visible light
in encompassed in it. The phone
screens would have been difficult to
view if it was just the main waves
of light
5. Used for signalling

Visible light can be used for

signalling thorough the VLC
(visible light
communication). This is a
kind of communication
technology in which data can
be transmitted at a speed of
10kbit/s.
6. Use of military

This is another important use of visible

light. The military fighters do use it
when going on missions in the dark to
be able to identify their enemies clearly
without their enemies seeing them. The
visible light is fixed into a kind of big
eyeglass and it could have different
colors.
7. Vehicular communication

With the headlights from vehicles

and the traffic lights in the road,
there is a vehicle to vehicle
communication. This
communication or use exist due to
visible lights fixed or used in these
headlights and traffic lights, if
not, there would be accidents and
chaos.
8. Information signboards

As we all know the signboards emit

light in the night for an easy view to
see the information given. The led-
light incorporated in these
signboards is visible light and it’s
very beneficial in our modern
world.
9. ID for rooms

These lights are fixed to the

top of each room may be in a
hotel or other large story
buildings for easy
identification of the rooms.
This here makes a lot of sense
and it makes good sense.
10. MRI scanners

Of course, the MRI scanner in

our hospital is made up of
visible light. It is also made up
of other rays like the radio
waves, but it can be switched to
visible light for various
functions.
BENEFITS OF VISIBLE LIGHT.

Visible light consume much less energy compared to radio

~

waves and microwaves.

~It is the only light in the electromagnetic spectrum which is

visible to the human eye and has lots of uses for mankind.

~Apart from radio waves MRI scanners also use visible light
which has a lot of functions too and is safe for humans.
Harmful Effects
Of Visible Light
EYE HEALTH PROMBLEM
The light you see has a wavelength within the range of
about 380 nm to 780 nm and a frequency range of about
405 THz to 790 THz. The human eye can suffer from
retinal injury due to overexposure to visible light.
Although some damage can heal, more serious
overexposure to visible light may lead to permanent eye
damage or even blindness. This type of eye problem is
caused by looking directly at something too bright like
the sun.
Vision Related Accidents
The human eye’s primary defense to damage due to overexposure to light is for it to close through the help of the eyelids. In some cases in which a
person doesn’t close her eyes right away prior to exposure to very bright light, this can cause temporary blindness. One vision-related accident that
can happen is when a person is driving during the night, then another vehicle with high beams passes by from the opposite lane. This can cause the
driver to close his eyes or experience temporary blindness if his eyes remain open during the incident. This can lead to a road accident.
FILM EXPOLOSURE PROMBLEM
Visible light affects films including those used in X-rays,
film photography and movies. A film creates an image by
using its chemical characteristics, which change according
to how light strikes its surface. An X-ray machine or a film
camera controls the light used for them. These films are
protected from light through their containers. Accidentally
removing them from these containers would result in
exposure of the films, which would render them useless or
cause permanent damage on the supposed image that
should appear on them.
DETERIORATION OF MATERIAL
s

Visible light can cause chemical changes to different materials, which typically result in deterioration of
their quality. Prolonged exposure to the light can result in a more weary look to these materials – due to
how light affects a material’s molecular and chemical properties. This condition is especially evident in
very old documents and photos like those historical ones archived in museums that tend to fade over time.
