When adding decimal numbers there are steps we can take to
make sure we get the correct answer.

The first step in this is to estimate an answer.

We do this by rounding the values we’ve been given to their

nearest whole number and using the same operation given in the
problem.

How could having an estimate answer be useful?

Share your ideas.

Let’s take a look at the example on the next slide.

Example: Calculate 14.98 + 5.39

First we round the given values to their nearest whole number. To

do this we look at the digit in the tenths value to decide if we round
up or down.
14.98 will round up to 15
5.39 will round down to 5

This means our estimate calculation is 15 + 5

15 + 5 will give us an answer of 20 this means 20 is our estimate.
This means that our actual answer later should be somewhere close
to 20
Let’s practice: Calculate an estimate for the following problems

a) 24.67 - 17.07 b) 32.78 + 45.49

c) 10.67 + 5.53 c) 64.09 -

44.45
Let’s practice: Answers

a) 24.67 - 17.07 b) 32.78 + 45.49

25 - 17 = 8 33 +
45 = 78

c) 10.67 + 5.53 c) 64.09 -

44.45
11 + 6 = 17 64 - 44
= 20

Once you have an estimate, the next step is to start to calculate the
actual answer using the decimal values given.
One way to do this is to decompose the values so that they are easier
to work with.

Example: We can now work with

the digits that have the
same value (eg. units)
32.5 + 17.09 = 30 + 2 + 0.5
10 + 7 + 0 + 0.09
40 9 0.5
0.09
= 49.59
We can also use a column method (see picture below)

Both methods can be used to get a correct answer, try them both
out and see which method works best for you.
Steps
Let’s practice: Solve the 1) Estimate
problems 2) Calculate
a) 21.35 + 89.01 using your
chosen
method.

b) 77.42 + 38.07
Steps
Let’s practice: Solve the 1) Estimate
problems 2) Calculate
c) 67.04 - 18.99 using your
chosen
method.

d) 45.32 + 108.09
